Does anyone know of a good source for online 'hold-em' practice at the play money tables? I've been playing at both Ultimate Bet and Paradise Poker, and while all was good, as per a few weeks ago, things have now drastically changed. I can't find a decent practice game to save my life. Most folks now want to go all the way to the river and spend as much play money as they possibly can along the way. Common sense and money management are close to impossible, and bad beats are extremely common. What used to be good practice now more resembles a Nintendo game and a total waste of time. Do I have anywhere to go for worthwhile practice games, or should I just start playing for real, precious money?

Tom this sort of play also frustrates me but I just tighten up and play quality hands, sure I get beat on the river but over the long haul I usually win. I am forced to play at pacific poker since they have a "no download" and that is all that I can play at work. I just play the 20/40 tables, there are no NL play tables there. Even though its play money it helps me to play my game and not go on tilt.

Hey Tom, yeah those free games are a waste, with the possible exception of just getting a feel for how different starting hands play out. I'd suggest some .25/.50 or .50/1 for real practice. granted you wont learn "how the pros play" in these games. On the plus side even a green rookie wont get killed if you understand odds and basic concepts.

I think mate the only way to learn poker is to play with real money. Play money is useful to learn the mechanics of the game but if you want to learn you are going to have splash the cash and get your feet wet.

I think PokerStars and planet both have micro limit tables where the blinds are like $.01/.02 so you can play there until your heart is content and actually learn how to play.

Buy some good books, post on here and think about the game a lot and you will soon start making money !

Good Luck

Try either poker pages.com or if you dont mind spending a little hard earned green on the same site they have poker school. Poker school people do resemble playing like it is real hard earned money cause it could earn them a trip to the tourney of thier choice over 500 buy in. Also they limit play money to a grand a day on pokerpages so if you loose that you are done till tommorrow, tends to slow down the play some plus they have a lot of freerolls which are practice there. I found it and like it maybe you will as well.

Easy, I learned this from experience. Sit and play really tight at the small blind no limit play chip tables on ub. Get a hundred thousand chips and go play with the big dogs at the 1000/2000 no limit table, or the 500 /1000 pot limiit (my fav). Those tables are the best on ub, although people are still a lot looser than playing for cash !! Ub has 1 penny/ 2 penny no limit, max buy in $2, these games are plenty loose, but if you play right you will take some cash and more importantly, some great experience from those rooms.

Best play with fun money generally resides in tournaments. Once you remove the trash you'll be playing with descent opposition, However, this will net you more experience with tournament play, but at least you'll be playing a better caliber.

I agree with the pokerpages.com site suggestion. The freeplay tourneys are generally good...You do have to make it past some all-in maniacs, but if you can ride them out once you get down to about 100people (The average NLHE tourney on here is about 350-500 players) the play tends to be way better.

Among this list of online poker rooms i've missed Pokerroom.com. That's where i've played up 'til now. Is there a specific reason why people don't like it there? Or is it just not known?

I like it there, it's no download, looks good. No problems with it till now. Only frustrating thing is finding a table where there is actually good play, and not just loose canons going in guns blazing with the trashiest of hands.

Honoustly, i don't think that is much different from other online play-money pokerrooms.

I'd like to see a psychological profile on the "loose cannons" Leroy was talking about. I see them as people who have to have constant action and don't seem to care if they lose a couple hundred in the process. They are also the ones who think nothing of pumping in a couple hundred in a slot machine just for the action. Poker is a thinking mans game, I just wish they'd stick to slots.
