Going all-in in 7 stud tourney, JakartaDave, 30. Aug 2003 23:09 | ||

| I recently won a small home Hold 'Em tournament, thanks in part to having diligently studied a chart of starting hands. In the final hand, my opponent went all-in with a stack roughly 1/4 the size of mine, and I had J-9o. I decided to call, since I could afford his doubling up, and I knew J-9o is a slight favorite against a random hand. (My opponent ended up having 7-4o.) I realize that 7-stud requires attention to all the up-cards, so it would be difficult to put together a similar, accurate chart for starting hands, but, since our next tournament will likely be 7-stud (high only), I'm trying to develop some rules of thumb about when to go all-in (or call someone else's all-in bet) on third street. I've already read Sklansky et al's Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players (as well as his Tournament Poker for Advanced Players) and took note of the appendix with helpful stats. But I would welcome any advice, particularly from folks with 7-stud tournament experience. For example, if one's stack was down to four of five large bets, would it be wise to go all-in from early position with a pair of deuces? Any three broadway cards? (My inclination is to say yes to both scenarios.) Thanks, Dave | ||
