| Poker isn't about ego, pride, or anything like that. It's about money. If you play for the glory of beating him, you're more than likely to be on tilt and end up losing. Keep neutral and play better than he does. Lee | ||

| Ok, so we all know your friend has a mouth and he has called you on your poker playing. He was probably also reacting to what you have been saying about poker. He is probably jealous (just a guess here, don't shoot!) because "someone" is learning a lot about poker and "someone" is talking a lot about poker. That someone is you. At your age, the idea is to become a better player. What this guy says and what other think of you will not change your skill improvement, what you are learning, and good playing habits you are forming NOW. If this guy is a bully and bad news, don't play. Life is way too short to waste time winning a poker game only to be beat to a pulp immediately after. If he is ok and the chances of getting mauled if you win is zero, you'll probably play this guy poker for money, since that is the usual outcome of this kind of argument. Here is my advice. Keep the stakes SMALL, and I mean really small. Why? What is really at stake here is bragging rights. There is a practical side to VERY small stakes. What if you win? Clean this guy's clock for $100 and you will probably have a bigger problem. Beat him for 100 pennies and he can shrug it off. The difference is your hide ... lol. Leave your ego at the door and keep that door open for the possibility he is a good player, taught by his dad/uncle/next-door-neighbour that used to be a pro. Smile and have fun. Read that Game theory chapter in Theory of Poker and if you think you understand it, ... use it. Not much use in this sort of heads up game, but you need to read it anyways and it is fun. Ax is a great hand in heads up. A pair rules. Change gears when you think he has you figured out. Slowplay and call to the river a few great hands and show them, ... it will get him thinking what you have when you call. Smile. Remember that it is in your best interest to have this challenge finish with both of you happy. Compliment his good hands. Take all 100 of the pennies. Win or lose, you should win. flintsword | ||
