All In w/ small pair in tourney?, epper, 30. Aug 2003 14:34 | ||

| Playing in limit hold em tourney. I am down to $300 and the limits are 100/300. I am first and get 3s and limits are going to 150/300 in the next hand. I get concerned that acting first, i may not get the amount of players to have the right odds. Also concerned that i am basically all in with a call because it is an aggressive table and will most likely get raised. I fold. MISTAKE? Moral of the story -- flopped a set, the blinds gave me nothing, later get KQ s and lose. ty | ||

| I think you meant to say that the limits were 100/200. But regardless, you need to go all in here with only $300 left with a pair. You can't sit around hoping to get pocket aces. Go out swinging. Also, with a pair, you don't want a lot of callers. The more callers you have, the less likely you are to win the hand. Rock on, BS | ||

| You will virtually never be getting the right odds to flop a set with a small pair in a limit hold'em tournament - you just dont get that many 6+ way action pots, except perhaps very early on. However, that doesn't mean there aren't times to play small pairs. This was probably one of them - you are sitting on a short stack, and half your chips are going in the big blind next hand. You may get eliminated, but it seems to be your best play at this point. A couple other thoughts: I dont like to call a raise with a small pair, even with a short stack that borders on desperation. The reason for this is that if you are the raiser, you have two ways to win the pot - getting everyone to fold or making the best hand. If you must call a raise with 33, for example, and you have a short enough stack that you are committed to playing the hand out, you must show down the best hand. 33 isn't going to be much of a favorite over any raising hand (even garbage like K9), and will be a significant underdog against an overpair. So, if I had 33 in the situation you described and was under the gun, I would raise, but if someone else had opened the pot for a raise and I was next, I would generally opt to pass the hand and hope for a better situation (which won't always come). Another thought: You said that the blinds were increasing next hand (the limit was going to $150-300, so the blinds would be $75-150). You had $300 in chips, $150 of which is in the big blind. There is hardly a single hand I won't defend my big blind with in this situation. You will be getting at least 3:1 odds on your call, depending on who the raiser is, and your random hand doesn't figure to be that big of an underdog, even if its 72 offsuit. I may pass this hand against an early position raiser and then a reraise, but I would definitely play it against a single player (it is too likely he only has A high). The problem with folding is that you now only have $150, half of which goes into the small blind. So, if you pass your small blind, you have $75, and your work is really cut out for you. I think you're better off gambling in the big blind, where you'll have at least $600 if you win. Mark | ||
