Yesterday and for some time I have been participating in freeroll tournys. One of my main problems is that I get way up and start playing more conservative. When I get some whole cards Im happy with I decide im going to play them. And Im always losing. What should I do. how can I play and win in these types of situations should I raise really big to try to get a few more people out of the hand and hope for a dead money caller who has nothing? leave any info u have here

In freerolls, there is a range of players, from the squirrels to the sharks (pros). In the early phase you are playing your cards, taking some risks, but generally playing your hands. Squirrels will play anything that walks and talks. They will lose playing those random hands. The pros will pass if they do not have a hand that they want to play against you and the odds are poor. As the squirrels are eliminated, you have a larger mix of players that are better players, who are actively trying to analyze you. If they detect that you are even thinking of going into your shell, they will take advantage of that fact pretty quick. Read the chapter on Game Theory in TOP and mix in a few random raises on an aggressive basis with your conservative play, and you will grab those extra couple of pots that will subsidize your stack while you are waiting for the AA, AK, or KK that we all like to see in the later stages of a tournament, that make your tournament stack grow significantly. Your question was pretty general, so I hope that this suggestion is useful. Good luck in your next freeroll!

Congratulations Craig! I am quite sure that it was your play and tenacity that garnered you 4th, but if my two cents helped, I am happy my comments were useful.

You have probably read this article, but I post it on a regular basis so that poker players that have not read it can enjoy it. It is the article "Fortune's Smile" by Jim McManus:

www.findarticles.com/cf_0/m1111/1807_301/68018764/p1/article.jhtml

If you haven't read Paul Samuel's articles, I recommend them. You can find the latest article that deals with short-stacked Tournament Strategy at:

www.pokerpages.com/articles/archives/samuel21.htm

It is fascinating.

Best of luck in future tournaments & make sure UPF gets the news of your 1st place finish when it happens.

Flint,

That article looks like part of what he wrote for Harpers, but then expanded into his book "Positively Fifth Street." GREAT book. Thanks for the link.
