| A long time ago, a guy named Aesop wrote a bunch of fables: simple stories with deep meaning. Here is one of them: The Goose and the Golden Eggs One day a countryman going to the nest of his goose found there an egg all yellow and glittering. When he took it up it was as heavy as lead, and he was going to throw it away, because he thought a trick had been played upon him. But he took it home on second thoughts, and soon found to his delight that it was an egg of pure gold. Every morning the same thing occurred, and he soon became rich by selling his eggs. As he grew rich he grew greedy; and thinking to get at once all the gold the goose could give, he killed it and opened it only to find -- nothing. Now, wasn't that wonderful? All the elements of a good story: good fortune, greed, murder and justice. OK, the next time *you* have the good fortune to stumble across a table with a golden goose (you know, that guy that is in every pot and occasionally sucks out a winner, but loses most of them and spews off money like an automated teller) please: PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR SELF-RIGHTEOUS, ALL-KNOWING, POKER TEACHING ASS AND ACCEPT WHAT THE GOOSE IS GIVING YOU AND EVERYBODY ELSE AT THE TABLE. This is how it went down. I put some money into UB because of the 50% buy-in bonus. So, how can I maximize my return? Hmmmm. I start scouting around and find the game I want. 4/8 hold'em with 1-2 blinds. Ding! I check it out and the average pot is about $40 and change and there is an average of about 7 people seeing each flop. Why is this such a great thing? Weel, it is great because UB credits your pending balance (bonus bucks) based on UlitmatePoints. Ultimate points are awarded on the basis of 1 UP per $ raked. So this game is generating about 2 UPs per hand or 20 per orbit. (Most places you only get 1 point per raked hand.) 20 UP = $2 of pending balance credit. So, it is costing $1 (net) per orbit to see hands instead of $3. That is a savings of 66%. So, I sit there, play a nice conservative game (OK, I was tighter than Uncle Dick's hat band but was still getting paid off on my hands, sometimes in three places) and gather in 84 UPs and $55.75 in 1 hour 10 minutes. 84 UPs are, themselves, worth $8.40. Now, maybe $60 an hour isn't the greatest 4/8 score of all time, but it is pretty damn good, especially if you can keep the game alive. I would have stayed all night but, as you might guess by this point, a couple morons killed the golden goose. The guy the game was built around. His blood type must have been O+. You know? The Universal Donor! So what if the guy is chasing with an underpair? He's putting his ill-spent money into this pot! This pot. In this game. Not some other game where he isn't getting abused. This game. Where we are playing. Geez Louise, Radar! You have been given a gift from the gods and all you can do is verbally abuse the guy and his play and generally insure that he will never return to lay his eggs in your game again. Now how stupid is that? Oy! Paul Stine College Station, TX | ||

| Amen to that! I get really irritated to hear all the 'river rat' comments. Half the time it's just inaccurate and they don't see the reason the guy stayed. They can't stand that he caught the river, when in actuallity he was getting the odds to stay. The rest of the time, when it is accurate, they should be keeping thier mouths shut and welcome all the money the guy's paying out the other 95% of the time, when he doesnt hit his miracle card on the river. Instead they feel compelled to let everyone know that they are the better player and this 'idiot' just got lucky and outdrew him. Check the ego and quietly watch the guy give all the money back and then some instead of sending him off to give your money away to another table. | ||

| I always find that it is players new to the game who feel the need to educate the table. There is nothing worse than a player who just learned not to play K7, but still plays A8 bitching out at the big fish for sucking out and chasing them away. I swear, if there were a rule against educating the table, there would be twice as many players and all the excess would be ricoculous fish. | ||
