Being a winning player means playing bad players, stdioh, 29. Aug 2003 16:27

Just a quick note. I've often heard aspiring poker players saying that they want to get into cheap money games against very skilled opponents so that they can get better at poker. While this is a laudable goal, I think a lot of people miss the boat.

I love to sit in a game once in a while filled with all the sharks from Kitchener and Waterloo. We'll sit around hooting it up and playing $1-$2 ... maybe a small $20 buy in and we'll all have fun and learn how to play eachother. That said, I don't get better at making money at poker by playing with them. Being able to make money in poker means learning how to pick on bad players. You don't make advanced bluffs at bad players who won't fold and you don't make advanced reads on a player who plays any two cards.

For any aspiring pros out there, the best thing to do is to learn how to play solid poker against terrible opponents. Read Lee Jones. Read Poker for Dummies. Read some Sklansky if you must, but don't get ahead of yourself. Learn the basics and then sit with the biggest fish you can find in the cheapest game you can find and gut them all. Get experience beating these pitiable souls and then when you're ready move up one level. Eventually you'll get to the $100-$200 game and face the real tough nuts. If you learn to play with the toughest opposition you'll be maladjusted to playing with bad opponents.

And where do you think the real money is in poker - playing at a table full of pros or at a table full of tourists?

The long and short of it is, don't get ahead of yourself.

Hey stdioh,

I think you brought up a point that isn't examined enough. IMO, the most important skill that doesn't get a lot of hype is game selection. It's not as fun as making a slick read, or reraising a blind stealer, but it increases your bottom line more than any sophisticated play by far. I know that I make the vast majority of my money by playing fundamental poker against weak players. That alone might not make me great, but it's great for my bankroll.

By the way, I know you're a developer, so do you have any advice for an unemployed recent graduate?

Thanks,
KID

I played tonight with a few guys who claimed to know how to play. I knew right off the bat that they were no competition, and as far as I was concerned, it was a blessing. I could joke around and carry on conversations and still have enough of my brain on the table to win. The problem was, there were so many fumbled cards, bad dealings, displaying the bottom of the deck for all to see, dealing cards up when they should be down and vice versa, betting/folding out of turn, etc, that it made it torture taking their money. Guess if you are looking for the fish at home games, you should hire a dealer. Does Lee Jones mention that?

It seems that the guys who say they are great at poker are in fact the fish. Most who can hold their own don't want to admit they will be taking your money!
