"The art of war" a poker book?, Brian462, 29. Aug 2003 14:38 | ||

| Recently started reading "The art of war" by General Tzu. It is widely considered a business book but strongly applies to poker. I have included a brief excert. 18. All warfare is based on deception. 19. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. 20. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him. 21. If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. 22. If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. 23. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. 24. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected. 25. These military devices, leading to victory, must not be divulged beforehand. 26. Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose. | ||

| Brian, It's, of course, one of the great war strategy books of all time. That's what it was written for, but since war is a competition, it's lessons can be applied to any competition. Guru | ||

| I read The Art of War and Zen and The Art of Poker both around the same time. They sure put a new perspective on poker and life for me and I enjoyed them immensely. The Art of War discusses the idea of being "formless" and it's an important concept in poker I think. | ||

| What'll really get you going is reading declassified CIA documents from the 50's. When the cold war was just getting rumbling, the CIA prepared documents for their agents telling them how to use various psychological techniques to recruit traitors among the enemy, etc. There is a wealth of insight into social engineering techniques there and while they may be obscolete for the purposes of modern espionage, I find them great in terms of dealing with getting what you want from a woman at the airport, dealing with a job interview, or at the poker table. I don't know if they are online anymore, but some googling would probably turn something up. | ||

| Well in this case I was thinking in terms of jumping a long line when I'm late for a flight, but if your mind were in the gutter I'm sure you could use the same concepts for other avenues :) | ||

| I have referenced this book for over 15 years as the concepts have always helped me in all the areas of my life; business, sports, family, and now even poker. On numerous times I will apply situations in poker to the thoughts in this book to develop my approach to this game. This book is a must read!!!!! | ||

| Intriguing comment. I have had Sun Tze's "The Art of War" in my library of favorite books since I was a kid. If you are into classic strategy books, you may want to read "A Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Mushashi, the classic Japanese book on strategy. The lessons expand the mind and since the mind is what most us play with (along with a very large bucket of guts, ...), it helps. flintsword | ||
