$2-$4 No Limit hand, Formless, 29. Aug 2003 14:14

| 9 handed online $2-$4 No Limit game, I have ThTs 3 off the button and an average stack. I am fairly new at NL ring but have a lot of tournament experience. UTG+1 limps for 4, I raise to 16, cutoff calls as does the original limper. Flop comes 8d Ad 9c and we all check. Turn comes Tc. Check, I bet 45 into a pot of 54, cutoff calls, limper folds. River is Qh. I check, cutoff bets 170 into a pot of 144, I call 163 and am all in. Cutoff shows Ks Jd, straight to the King, I go to bed. I'll show my thought process in another post, but I'd like to hear how you think I played the hand, because I think I made a few errors. | ||

I think my first mistake is playing too big of a stack. For a newish NL player, even a pretty good one, I think you want to consider playing a small stack when possible. With loose players and these blinds, I'd buyin for $80, wait for a big hand and find a customer, then stack off on the flop. I'd rathole back to $80 every time I could if they'd let me on PokerStars. But I don't want to get bogged down in an ratholling argument here; the rest of the hand played out interestingly, so let's move on.... > UTG+1 limps for 4, I raise to 16, cutoff calls as does the original limper. I did not raise enough, I should have gone for 20, maybe 24 here. TT will not play as well 3 way as heads up, and winning the pot right there would be cool too with the limp money, so you might as well go hard or go home here. > Flop comes 8d Ad 9c and we all check. I am not betting an Ace high flop here. That is all. > Turn comes Tc. Check, I bet 45 into a pot of 54, cutoff calls, limper folds. Mistake number 3 if you're counting at home. I did not bet enough. I am extremely confident with my hand right now. There are two flush draws and the board is getting crowded at the top with 89TA. I have 208 in my stack and both opponents can cover me. In retrospect, this situation screams overbet the pot, and if I'm going to do that I'll be so pot-committed I might as well shove it in. Also, because the bet was checked around on the flop, my turn bet is not going to get as much respect and I am more likely to get called by crappier hands. Another good reason to bet hard here. I think $100 would be a good sized turn bet BUT in a one table tournament I'd shove all in with no hesitation here. It's a lot different moving a live stack than a tournament stack! The advantage of shoving all in here is I'll still get called by made hands but will not get called by drawing hands. A flush draw can call me here if he knows I'll pay off. > River is Qh. I didn't feel my opponent had a jack given the way the hand played out, and felt since i checked the flop and river he could be betting as little as a pair of Aces here. I beat pairs, two-pairs and undersets, and if he has AA it's not my lucky day.

| I think it was just a bad call by him on the turn...$45 with an openended...and even if he hits a pair on the river he still has the ace to worry about, not to mention a set or better... Tough luck. | ||

| the only mistake i saw is this: u stared at your 10-'s so long, u forgot to look for the straight, then u checked to what U thought was a winning hand (hence the allin call) . i would bet 40's on 10's figureing the other guy wouldn't call unless he had a straight (watch the board for those sneaky ones) especially when u have trips. if he re-raised all in, u woulda then thought real close and probvably folded. | ||
