raise river for value, Georges Macar, 28. Aug 2003 20:04

Hi,
I'd like your comments on this play : (6-12 limit holdem).
I have KQ off, and I limp in from late position. 4 players see the flop.
Flop : k 6 3 rainbow.
Everybody checks, I bet and get one caller.
Turn : 9.
He checks, I bet, he calls.
River : Q. No possible flush.
Now he bets.
Should I just call or raise ?
I understand you have to bet for value here, but do you have to RAISE for value ??
I was thinking : if he had a set on the flop or the turn, he would have raised me before the river.
same thing with pocket Q.
he has no straight, because he cannot call me all the way with J 10 (nothing on the flop, not even overcard, only an inside straight draw on the turn).
So I decided to raise. He reraised. I call (size of the pot !).
He had J 10.
Any comment welcome....

Agaisnt a player that bad (not sure if you had enough time to figure he was indeed that horrible) I'd raise there. Sure, you can't put him on the completed double gut shot the one time a night he hits it, but he'll also call you're raise with any pair in this spot.

I try to put beats like this out of mind by the next hand. that dude(and dudes like him) will pay you too much over time with dumb plays like that.

Well if he stayed around just to hit a runner, runner, gutshot.......than good for him, and GOOD for you as well!!! Okay, not this time but so what. I would have raised him on the river as well, BUT... If he was check-calling you all the way and now leads at the river, and you raise him there? If he raises you back, he more than likely has you beat because he sounds like a weak/passive player who is a complete calling station....and when a player like that 3 bets you, you're no good!!

Why do you assume he would raise you before the river with QQ and a K on the board? A good player should at least bet out with it on the flop, but as you found out, he isn't a good player.

I would have been more afraid of this hand when he bet out on the river. The bet on the river is a huge red flag any way you look at it- he either made the straight, made a set, made the same hand you had, made a lesser two pair (say he was holding Q6), or was slow-playing a set (bad play here, but we've all seen it happen). Three of those you're screwed, one you split, one you win.

If he didn't have something of a hand he wouldn't have gone from check-calling all the way to leading out on the river.

I was assuming he would raise before the flop with QQ, not on the flop.

When he bet the river, I thought the Q had helped him by giving him 2 pairs, inferior to mine.

Thanks for your comments.

George.
