I got to tell you I just don't know what I should do. I've been playing online for awhile and started w/ $115 and built that up to almost $700 playing 1-2, then 2-4, then 3-6 and finally I found the game that I felt suited me at 5-10. I went from $300 to $680 in about a week of good play. Yesterday and today I played the same game w/ a few different players and in 4 sessions managed to lose my entire bankroll. I can tell you how it happened but suffice it to say that I feel I played well, maybe a couple mistakes but for the most part the river or slow-played AA - JJ killed me.

I don't want to go chasing that money as I know it's gone. Perhaps it's time for me to realize that I am one of the 90% that I've worked so hard not to be. I know my game has improved considerably since I started and I can beat a great number of players but this is seriously disheartening. Did I get outplayed, unlucky and am I just a bad player who has not realized it? I hate to think of myself as one of those fish I used to love to see.

I guess it's time to sit in the sun and think about if this is really a game I can play or if I should just stop here...

Feeling like I just got kicked in the cashews...

Gerard.

You're playing with a bankroll that is 70 big bets. Statistically you need 300. Even if you are beating the game, playing above your bankroll is just asking to lose it, because you are bound to catch a bad run of cards and then you're on the rail. I'd suggest you try again at the lower limits and build from there. Do not move up until you have an adequate roll.

Hey Gerard,

Let me tell you that with a $680 bankroll, and putting in four sessions of $5-10, it is so easy to lose that regardless of how well you play, really it is. The game goes at such a fast pace you don't even realize how many hands are dealt your way, and if you get a few good hands in a row and get them all cracked, it's very conceivable to lose over a hundred bucks just on those few hands alone.

I know it must be very disappointing and frustrating for you right now, but believe me ......the amount that you lost doesn't mean that you have played bad poker. The limit was just too high to handle a few losses, and that's too much to expect from yourself........ and as a result from that, it left you feeling bummed out. Well don't let that happen.........not if you want to succeed in this. Put it behind you and start fresh. Poker is a series of long term results.

Give it another go, but find a comfortable limit to play in; one that will give you a better peace of mind, and one that your own bankroll can handle. (remember........protect and cherish your bankroll). When you build it up to an amount that can handle all the ups and downs, then take the next step. There's no rush.

Take some time off if that will make you think things out more clearly......and enjoy the rest of the summer! Noone said you "have" to play poker......only if you really want to, remember that!........it's no biggy.

Of course you're right. Thank you. Playing above my head, WAY above my head, thinking I could beat the game cause I had caught some cards and it would continue. Noiseboy used the term "hubris" in his reply and I think that would fit to some extent. My ego says I can play with them but my bankroll says to stay lower until it's nice and healthy and fat... protected, cared-for and nutured...

Back to square one but with some lessons learned and a little more experience.

Thanks again.

Gerard.

Ostebovik it is very easy to get discouraged from the game after you get your butt kicked good. What is very important during these times is to review your game and the decisions you make while you are playing. It is very easy to convince yourself you are doing something wrong when you are losing but this may not be the case. There is a lot of short term luck involved in this game and you must accept it or you will be very unhappy with your choice of professions. I was in Vegas for 3 weeks in April/May this year and dropped $22000. I wasn't very happy but that's the way it goes sometimes. You got to eat it and come out fighting or go home. Not only is compassion difficult to find in the poker room it falls very short of getting the job done. Ask yourself whether you can handle the ups and downs of poker because even the best players in the world are not exempt from bad runs of cards. Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN

Thank you for the reassurance. bad runs of cards happen to all players, this I do know but I guess I forgot that in my good run. I do need to have the bankroll to weather the storm. Another lesson in patience and discipline.

Dude, you are just playing way above your bankroll. Even for a good player, a swing of -$2000 at 5-10 is not uncommon.

You need 300BB's, if you are playing particularly aggressive games 500BB are better. If the games you are playing are loose passive, you might get away with 200BB.

I'm just coming off a bad streak that lasted almost a MONTH! If you play long enough, it's actually inevitable that this will happen, you have to be stoic and not let it change your play at all.

BTW, when I say you "shouldn't let it change your play", I'm assuming that you might have the "running bad makes you play bad" problem that a lot of people do. However, when you are on a downswing, you do need to evaluate whether or not you are doing anything wrong to make the streak worse, like chasing draws without the odds to do so.

What's funny is I have the "reverse tilt" problem. Sometimes when I'm playing good and running good, I get a case of hubris and sometimes get a bit too aggressive. The key is you have to be objective in your evaluation of your play.

Good luck!

Actually I can stay pretty solid even when running bad but I do bang the desk when at home and online or go to the bathroom and shout at the walls to release the steam... so I don't keep/start steaming...

I was just way over my head in regards to my bankroll. I can play with those guys I just have to excersize patience and wait until my bankroll can handle the swings. Like some people in SF and bank roll can swing both ways... :-)

thanks for your response and good luck to you.

Gerard.
