| Hi Craig I would recommend that you keep other avenues open for yourself in life. Like you, I played lot a of poker with my buddies at the papershack when I was very young....I do not think it was a good influence on my life....Poker is easy to get caught up into...especially if you are young......That said, I went on to play professionally. Life is Good :-) Roy Cooke on 27. | Craig, As I suggested in an earlier post, the more well rounded as a person you are - the happier and more successful you'll be. On the other hand, I get the feeling that no one is going to be able to talk you out of your dream - you're just asking looking to get someone to agree with you, and that's ok too - we all need someone on our side from time to time. But if people have been trying to talk you out of it for two years and you're still this focused on your goal - my guess is, you're going to make it just fine. Angel | ||

| I am obviously not a professional poker player...but at 34 I am in the middle of a career change from systems analyst to Historian (yikes!...big jump). I would never attempt to dissuade you from reaching toward a dream. That said, a word of caution (and encouragement).....The widest bases make the tallest pyramids. What I mean by this is that at 15 yrs of age you have an entire life ahead of you....while poker is now your passion (and a good one IMO) it may not be one forever for a variety of reasons. Make absolutely sure that you continue to grow not just in Seat 8 Table 23 at the Bellagio but in life as well...We have all heard stories about people dropping out of college (a little early for you I realize) to make the move to vegas to play poker...and that is an exciting proposition. It is one i've daydreamed about. To use poker jargon to make an effective metaphor....be committed to your goal but leave yourself outs. Remember, the more you know about philosophy, psychology, art and business the more you know at the poker table. And if by chance at 26 you decide you want to pursue a different path you will have already cleared the trees from your path. | ||

| Outstanding reply Frinky. Very well stated and thought out. From the responses I've read from yourself, Roy and Angel......Craig definitely got some really good advice, along with some very kind words of encouragement. I have nothing to add..........you said it perfectly. 4 POKER on 27. | Hey Kid, I think you're crazy to be thinking about professional poker at such a young age. You're obviously a bright individual with enormous potential so you could do anything you wanted. Don't waste it on poker. Don't get me wrong , I love to play poker and I do very well at it, but let me tell you poker is a TOUGH TOUGH GRIND even for the best players. It's not an easy life and it can be very hard on relationships. You should seriously reconsider your dream because you will miss out on a lot of other things. Anyway , Good Luck to you either way! | ||

| Sure. Work on poker now while you are young, but don't plan on it being your profession just yet. Take the kids' lunch money (I always had plenty of hockey cards and video games from kids who couldn't pay up), but learn your schoolwork too, go to university, get a really good education. Use poker to pay for that education. Then get a regular job and play poker as a weekend warrior. When you're sure that you love the game and that you'll never get tired of it, and that you can definitely make wheelbarrows full of money at it forever, then quit your day job and take a shot at it - at least that way you will have something to fall back on if you fail. My family believes in everybody having a profession and a trade. My profession is computer science and my trade is poker. I know that if for some reason I lose the former I can put food on the table with the latter, but I prefer my desk job to my table job - I always have a good session at work - my standard deviation is nonexistant and I'm very +EV | ||

| Oh, and the first thing you should do is see if you can cut it in a real environment. Set up a netteller or other account, link a couple of hundred dollars from your bank account into it, and use it to buy into an online poker site. Of course you'll be lying about your age on the site. Go onto ultimate bet or one of the other ones, deposit your money there, and try to make some real cold hard cash there. Eric123 did a similar thing. If memory serves he made $600,000 on UB while he was still in highschool. The best part is that you don't have to worry about the underaged gambling thing since you're gambling in a foreign country anyway. If you can prove yourself online you've got a shot at maybe being a pro some day. If you get your ass handed to you in the low limit online games then you'll be in for a rude awakening. The real world of poker is nothing like what you'll find at a table of 15 year olds playing $1-$2. | ||

| Well, there's no reason your parents have to know what you are doing either. If you really want to get the experience, save $200 ... I used to work my arse off when I was 15 so I always had money ... I don't know what your cashflow is like, but you can scrape together some cash, go to a bank and open an account that your parents don't know about, link it to netteller online, and you're all set. The only thing you can't do is get a credit card, but there are lots of people who play online without credit cards. | ||

| I think you have to be 18 to open a bank account. Or at least that's how it is down here. | ||

| Perhaps Canada is a little more flexible. I've had a bank account for two years *longer* than I've been alive. | ||

| I'm probably going to sound like a grumpy old fart but learn to spell and communicate properly so you have career choices outside of poker and McDonalds. At 15 you should be more than capable of capitalization and proper grammar. Simply being able to write properly guarantees you a much better job then most of your peers. The better the job you can get the more money you will have to spend on poker. Good luck Craig. | ||
