Why can't I win at "limit?", Tig1010, 27. Aug 2003 13:37

Put me in No Limit or Pot Limit sit-n-go, or a multi-table, and I almost always make it into the $$$, but at a Limit Hold 'em table I'm lucky to make it into the top 80% ???

2 nights ago I won and entry into the PartyPoker million III, semi-finals, by playing at a $25 table (of course this was a No Limit table).

So thought it be best to play some sit-n-go Limit tables last night to get some practice in, I played a total of 4 sit-n-go's and my best finish was 7th.

I think my major problem is that I get bored with Limit, trying to steal blinds of semi-bluff a pot seems almost impossible, as many will call a raised bet.

Any suggestions, on how I should go about getting in the right frame of mind when playing limit would be greatfully appreciated, as I think that's my biggest obstacle.

Thanks.....

Todd

I think you said it all right there. Personally I lke limit, in that I can play more good drawing hands without the risk of someone going all-in after my call.

Here is the way I look at any poker game I play. I play for money that is my motivation. If you want to play a limit game that you don't fall asleep at then play higher limits. Like if your playing 2/4 play 5/10 or 10/20. Trust me I use to be exactly like you, could not stand playing 3/6 limit. So I stated playing 15/30 limit and my game went to a whole other level. Now I love to play in a3/6 limit game. But hey, I will always be with you when you say No-Limit is better then limit.

I have been there. This may or may not apply to you, and I'm not accusing you or your game of anything, but keep reading....

I had to swallow a big ego pill, but I admitted to myself that one of the reasons I was profiting greatly at the No Limit side of things was that I had good reads on BAD players, produced confusing betting patterns, and had good timing on my plays. BUT, I wasn't playing the correct hands! I was lucky enough to make up for bad plays in one fail swoop. I (anyone) can't afford to do this in limit poker, thus my success rate was lower if I didn't catch perfect cards.

I hope I have solved my own problems, but admitting that my limit tourney game WAS weak was the first step, and now I'm acting on it. I began with "Sklansky's Tourney Book for Advanced Players", and have dug into a lot of games to test my resolve.

Hopefully, you're a decent player and just need to tweak a few things here and there, and don't need a complete overhaul before next weekend!!

Hi,

I totally agree, when playing No Limit, I definately can get away with playing weaker opening hands, and as you I can get a better feel of players, where in Limit it's much tougher.

Odd you should suggest Sklansky's Tourney Book for Advanced Players, I just bought it yesterday : )

Thanks....

I'm in the same boat and I was pretty pissed to find out the PPM is a limit game. I should probably get that book, lol.

Limit is almost a completely different game. It's similar, but a more magnified change, to the difference between playing higher limit games and dropping into low-limit no-foldem games.

It takes a different mindset, a different strategy set and a lot more patience IMO. You can't just blast your way to victory any more- which sounds as if it might be your major tactic.

I think some experience at limit might help your overall game, as long as you don't let it mess up your big-bet play.
