Casino Arizona doubles size of Talking Stick facility

SALT RIVER COMMUNITY - One of Casino Arizona's two facilities is nearly doubling in size today.

The casino unveils a new sports bar with 16 plasma-screen TVs, creating what casino president and CEO Jon Jenkins has called "a sports bar on steroids" at the Casino Arizona at Talking Stick, 9700 E. Indian Bend Road. Grand opening ceremonies begin at 3 p.m. at the casino, just east of Loop 101 on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

The expanded Talking Stick casino will be twice as large as before, with three bars, two restaurants, 532 slot machines, 38 blackjack tables, 46 poker tables, keno and off-track betting lounges in addition to the sports bar. All of the casino's poker tables at its McKellips facility will move to Talking Stick, making that casino the permanent poker house.

The casino's sports bar also will play host to three weekly sports-talk shows.

Mark Lewis will tape a weekly show, We've Got Game, on Thursday nights that will air at 10:30 a.m. Saturdays beginning Sept. 6 on Channel 10.

Mark Asher and John Gambadoro will broadcast their weekly radio show live from Talking Stick from 1 to 6 p.m. Fridays for XTRA Sports 910 AM, while Roc and Wolf of KMVP-AM (860) ESPN radio will be on location from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays for AZ Gameday.

Casino Arizona has a second facility a few miles south of Talking Stick at 524 N. 92nd St., just east of Loop 101 and McKellips Road.

For more information, contact the casino at (480) 850-7777 or on the Web at www.casinoaz.com.

Well, I went down there last night, which was opening night. It's a nice place. Basically, it looks like a giant tent outside, but inside it looks more like a casino than the other location. It feels smaller, and it seems like there are a few less tables in the poker room.

I couldn't get into a game though, because they were starting a tourney just as I got there, and they upped the buy-in limit to 300 players and sold out, so there were only 6 tables playing ring games. I should be able to get into a game next Tuesday or the following weekend (I won't be able to get there this weekend).

From what I watched, it looked like the rake, jackpot, etc, were all the same. But the atmosphere is nicer (at least, more like a casino), even though it feels more crowded to me. Honestly, I have mixed emotions... maybe just because I couldn't play, and because it's further from home... so I am reserving final judgement until I can play two or three sessions there.

oh, one more thing: they decided to install the shuffling machines in all the tables and are using them for all games now, including tourneys.

OK, things were back to normal tonight, and I actually got to play tonight! The games are the same, the players are the same, but the atmosphere is a lot nicer. It feels more like playing in a casino than the old place, which felt more like playing in a hangar.

Overall, I give them kudos, I think they did a nice job with it.
