I am a weekend poker player with some buddies of mine and I would like some advice on what significance and advantages seat selection have. Thanks, this is my first post, and I find UPM to be an excellent online resource. I've been reading for a few days now.

You could fill a dozen books with the effects of position on the game.

In a nutshell, you want to act after the more wild and loose opponents and before very tight and timid ones. This is so that you can see raises coming before you have to act. If you sat in a reversed fashion(so that the loose players were on your left) then you will get raised more often when you limp in with your borderline hands, forcing you to contribute more on a weak hand or waste your bet altogether.

Acting late in a game is always to your benefit for pretty much the same reason, you get to see what happens before you have to act. So, if your home game lets the dealer choose what game is played, play a game where the dealer is always in last position(on the button) to get as much benefit as possible. Knowing you are going to act last in all of the later rounds of a hand is a huge benefit and frequently lets you play weaker holdings than you would otherwise play.

Like I said, these are just a few of the major benefits of position. I'm sure you can find alot more info about it on this forum and most books on poker will cover the topic at least somewhat.

Good luck in your next game,
Brian
