Certainly books could and have been written on the subject; perhaps if you gave some indication of where you are at in your poker education it would be helpful. In the meantime, I would suggest learning and striving to perfect discipline and patience. There are too many would be pro's out there who can very literally beat everyone at the table but themselves - and as a result, never make it.

What a great time to start preparations! In that case - read, study and continue to work on your personal development. The personal development may look like it's out of place here - but a well rounded person will make you both happier AND more successful. Reading the posts and participating here will be an excellent start. There are some excellent books on the game out there - when I taught my wife to play I started her on Mike Caro's Book of Tells. It struck alot of my poker playing peers as an odd place to start at first but poker is, primarily a game of people - so a huge advantage you can give yourself now is to study people - in the supermarket, waiting for the bus, at the library - see how many things you can determine about them from their mannerisms, actions, expressions.

Good luck to you!

Craig,
Like you I am new in getting an education in the game of poker, however I find the free money tables get you into a lot of bad habits, also they are boring and a waste of time considering everyone on the flop is betting like they have four aces in the pocket. I have found it helpful to click on and watch, watch the high stakes games online, watch and see what thier hold cards are when they are showed, make mental notes. Move on down the line money wise, these are the same players playing now that are playing when you become old enough to play, make notes on thier play and watch. This way when you do meet them head up in the future you will already know a lot of thier game.
The small tables the ones where there is little money at stake are a lot like free tables but again thier is an education there as well and here you will see the minows comming to the lunch counter. Here you will see a lot of people playing a 3 nine off suit and see flops that contain nothing for them and they follow it all the way to the river like they just flopped trips, it is fun to watch and not bad to be a part of I dont make a killing off these ttables and could not live off what I make but it is fun to make 30 to fifty bucks a week off the minnows who have a quarter and a dream.

Life and people themselves will teach you more than every book in the library and the only thing I feel a man needs to learn is his own abilities and to improve on them and to have a firm sense of confidence in yourself and your play, if you dont who else will.

As for free tourneys they are on pokerstars every day at least twice a day as well as here on Planet, there is an omaha tonight on planet and I play the freerolls on the weekends both sat and sunday. Looking forward to seeing you on the tables and checking out your game. Like I said I too am learning this game and in learning I want to learn all I can.

I don't want to sound like someone's mom as I've tried that road also and to be honest it's a very hard road. A semi pro especially at a young age is the way to go. Maybe when you get older and retire is the time to do it. Not to sound conceited but I've been trying to do it for 7.5 months and have turned a 15k profit. Hardly a significant amount to live on and I can tell you I'm better than 99.5% of the people I've played with online and in the cardrooms. Coupled with the fact I don't have any other income at this point and it puts lots of pressure on you. The freedom is especially good though. You wake up when you want to and have lots of free time to do what you want to do. Also I'm sure you'll get to crossroad at some time and want to move to high game and sometimes you have to take that shot but if you can make a small profit TAKE IT. DON'T GET STUCK. A couple of times I've left as much as 5k in various online accounts. DON'T do this either as sometimes a high limit game will look real good with maniacs but you can get stuck big. Don't loose more than what you can get back in one session. And be happy to take small med wins each day. You'll be hyped to play again the next day after 20 straight days of wins. Don't let 1 day ruin a whole month. That is the trap most aspiring pros run into early and one i've fallen into a couple of times. Those couple of times have costed me 7k +. Best of luck though hope to see you on TV in the near future.

Craig,

Try Pokerpages.com, because of the built in incentives the competition is better than at real online casinos that just give you play money. They also have a poker school but you probably have to 21 to join that even tho it is play money because you can win a sponsorship into real money tournies.

I usually play in the pokerschool but once in a while go to pokerpages to use what I've learned at loose games when I play tight. If you go check table for thepokerchef that's me.

Check out Poker for Dummies by Richard D. Harroch and Lou Krieger(dean of Poker School Online. Also if your primary interest is Holdem get Holdem Excellence: From Beginner to Winner by Lou Krieger

Good Luck and "Catch ya on the flopside"

if you are in college just find a group that is interested and play if even if it is fifty cents is the big bet. you'll find that people playing for real money play a lot different than those playing for pretend chips. even though you try to use your play money like real money most people dont. also if you live on a college campus or know someone who does, either them or you can talk to a resident advisor about putting on a tournament with a very small buy-in. that way you atleast get some experience with real people
