| I was playing online yesterday in a 20-40 game. We were 4 handed and this hand came up. I'm in the small blind with 8,7 diamonds. The under the gun player(who plays over aggressively and bluffs foolishly) limps and the button limps. It gets checked after I throw in my $10. The flop comes 8-2-2 unsuited and I lead at the pot. The big blind folds, aggressive man calls and the button mucks. An offsuit 3 hits the turn and I bet again and get called again. The river brings a 10 and I bet and this time I get raised. Since a bluff is possible(although this would be a strange place to do it) I pay the hand off. H e shows me the Q10. It didn't shock me about his holding or even how poorly he played the hand(until the river that is) but I was disappointed in myself for making the error I had just made!!! The problem with my bet on the river is that with THIS TYPE OF PLAYER there is negative expectation with the final bet. This is true because of what I know of his betting tendencies especially preflop and what he is likely or more so unlikely to hold. This player was very aggressive and would have raised any ace playing 4 handed as well as any wired pair. He would have raised me on the flop with an 8 in his hand and it is unlikely that the 3 on the turn would have hit him(but again I wouldn't have been shocked). So what could he have??? Well since he COULD have a deuce and certainly wait to pop me on the river coupled with his tendency to bluff in foolish situations I should easily have checked this hand on the river and called if he bet. He was aware enough to know I held an 8 and he was aggressive enough to raise me if he hit the 10 on the river. It was a solid error(not a small one) that I made in the hand. I needed to slow down a second or two instead of moving so fast. Had I considered the situation more closely I would have realized my error then instead of 30 seconds later after it had cost me money!!!! Oh well. Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN |
