Ultimate Bet and their problems, Jimmy Easton, 25. Aug 2003 18:41

Ultimate Bet has been basically useless for 2 weeks or so now. They have posted numerous messages about being back up in '24 hours' and then left the message up for 72 hours or so with no improvement. I do feel that they have the best interface but are showing that they do not care about their patrons. They should ive an honest answer about why they are having so much trouble. They tried to pass that they experienced a ;unexpected and sudden increase in traffic' but there is no way that they surpassed their Friday/Saturday night highs on a Tuesday afternoon. So that was another lie. Does anyone have the real reason they are suddenly becoming one of the worst sites to deal with from the best?

I can hazard a guess.

They are probably using Linux/Intel boxes with MySQL for the database. This is a good combination as far as it goes, but it CAN have volume problems with the database if not designed right as the database grows larger and larger.

I noticed that they recently changed the user account page so that not all your info shows when you first go to the page. This probably decreased the number of database hits significantly.

I would give them time to rewrite and TEST the database code, as well as add a new server or two. Being in the biz, I can assure you that changing database models to accomidate LARGE online histories in realtime is a complex problem.

BTW, PartyPoker recently experienced the very same problem and corrected it by changing servers to Sun/Solaris boxes for the most critical machines, this helped a lot.

I am not sure I would guess out of the dark that they are using MYSQL. If they are then that is the problem. MYSql is by no means an enterprise database.

From what I understand is they are dealing with a hardware issue and need to distribute the load better during peak times.

I just finished a project for Wells Fargo where the database had over 5 million transactions per day. So UB is miniscule in comparison and should have more than adequate software to handle it. And with the cash these online places make, software and hardware, etc should be the main priority.

I have had 4-5 problems with UB no connecting and it is real bad for business.

I agree that given the money that is being generated they should be able to use decent software/hardware. I base my guess on the knowledge that PartyPoker was using Linux/Intel with MySQL up untl recently after a discussion with a tech support type.

I see strong, vialble companies all the time using inexpensive equeipment and software that is left over from startup times. The company I work for moved to Sun with Oracle years ago in our startup phase and have never regretted it.

The problems at UB don't "feel" like bandwidth problems, but rather DO have that sluggish database feel to them, especially since they have made changes to avoid hits on the database when checking account status.

I have to disagree some but not completely. I will give you that it could be a problem if MySQL is improperly configured. I'm in the biz as well and run my applications on Linux boxes with MySQL databases. That little company e-trade sold all their Sun boxes and switched to Linux for an increase in performance and about 13.5 million in cash in their pocket from selling the Sun boxes. I think it is more likely they are running on Microsoft OS's with Oracle or Microsoft's SQL server. If so, its lucky they have been up at all:-) Sun is very impressive if you want a pure power box. I would have this site set-up to run 10-30 tables on a linux box and this add a new one as it grew. You are probably correct but still, linux rocks:-)

I don't know if its database related or a data entry error, but their frequent player freerolls this past weekend were a disaster. I finished 1013th for the qualifying period. That means I should have gotten to play in the freeroll for those that finished 901-1200. When I went to register it wouldn't let me. It said I didn't earn enough ulitmate points. I did some investigating and found that the 901-1200 freeroll had the same registration requierements as the 601-900 freeroll. SO the only people who got to register for that freeroll were people who qualified above 900. I think 27 people played in it. I got to play in nothing. I have placed a couple of emails to them (last Saturday) and have heard nothing back. I think they owe me something. I'm very disappointed.

I am glad to see this being discussed. I was at UB last night and in a good groove at a fairly loose/passive table, with a good rhythm and good edge on the verge of winning a hand when the table locked up - this has happened FAR to many times in the past two weeks and has forced me to look for other poker rooms. I do prefer UBs format and graphics (sans silliness like avatars, etc. & has the POV advantage) so I am sad this is happening - it's very frustrating! (vent, vent, harrrumph!)

Okay...I was wondering why everyone kept asking how to sign up...I was like, it is SO simple, just click the tourny and hit register, whats the problem, you moron...makes more since now :)

it was nice to only have 27 people in the 900-1200 tourny...i finsihed 870 something but coudln't make my one so i played in that one...i was surprised that everyone had the max of like 2500 chips, but even more surprised to see only 27 people!

I finihed 4th and won $120 which was nice...

Sorry for your dissapointment, and i really hope UB sorts this out

I love their software, by far the best...but lately this sucks.

Looks like they're making amends. They're re-running the tournament on Sunday at 4:30 for those who haven't played in a freequent player freeroll yet.
