A couple threads from the last week have me really scratching my head. If possible I'd like to get some feedback from the panel

First there's the guy (can't remember his handle) just starting out playing 4 tables at once and moving up and down in limits seemingly every hour. Then there's AKQJ9 who sounds like a guy with a huge bankroll and a strong desire to go pro. Nothing wrong with that, but he seemed unsure of his game, yet he's getting his feet wet playing the best of the best at 40-80! This is totally insane to me. Especially the second example

I'm no psych major, but this has to have something to do with WPT, WSOP, or maybe even Rounders. Are a lot of the new Vegas players trying to be Helmuth, Moneymaker or Matt Damon in the first week? If so, I'm sure the vast majority go home broke with a quickness.

What I'm getting at here: I'm moving out to Vegas sometime in the next few months. I'm a solid player(with tons to learn, not even close to expert, yet) and a decent bankroll. I have very modest goals, basically break even+food+rent. anything sustained above that and I'll move slowly up as I feel ready.

I don't have any visions of being a "Superstar". I'd be happy milking a fair living from something that challenges me and I enjoy. Do I have a better chance to make it with this mindset?

Radman-

I'm not a pro, and someone like 4POKER can probably answer your question better, because he lives that life, but here is my take for what it's worth:

I think the clue to how well you will do lies in this one statement in your post:

"I'm a solid player(with tons to learn, not even close to expert, yet)"

This statement tells me that you are honest with yourself about your game and will always be looking for ways to improve. I think that's an important quality for success. Best of luck to ya, but I expect you won't need too much of it! :)

Hey Radman,

I agree to what Moz has told you.

You definitely have a very realistic approach and that's important to not go in over your head as that may cause you to have unrealistic goals as well. You'll probably stand a better chance at keeping disciplined also.

But along with those qualities, you must have a strong enough desire to really want it, as that desire can help you to improve the skills that you do have, which can increase your chance at winning and perhaps to play at a limit that will leave you better than just break out even. Go for it........but want it.........be hungry!

Radman,

You sound like you're ahead of the curve and I wish you well. A couple of thoughts to take with you...

Patience, discipline and hunger.

Why Vegas? Given a choice - I'd pick California...as a matter of fact - I did. :)

While you have modest goals - keep in mind that even the modest goals you have set are far beyond most peoples reach (food+shelter from poker winnings). 40 hours of $4/$8 a week winning 1 BB/hr is $320/wk; much higher and the competition really picks up. I don't know what limits you are thinking about but don't dismiss the smaller limits, they are a good place to hone your skills and with proper game selection 2 and 3 BB/hr are possible.

Again, good luck!

Hi Radman

Yes, you have a MUCH better chance of surviving the test of time with that mindset. I based my poker career on consistency. There are many players who chop and grind there way to a comfortable living who do better economically over time than many of the "big" name players.

By playing in that manner you will not have the emotional swings that burns out many players. You will also face a lower level of competition and will not have to play as well in order to make money as a player playing higher.

Best of Luck :-)

Thanks Angel and Roy.

Angel- Vegas because I love it! Not that's there's anything wrong with Socal. and I will probably start out at 4-8. 1 BB would be more than enough because I'll be living on the cheap at first and 60+ hours is no problem for me as I spent my early-mid twenties working 80+

Radman,
I wish you the best on your venture. But I question this: Vegas?
I can not think of a thing on the plus side for Vegas. If you want comps
they are near the bottom of the pile. If you want room comps it's even worse. If you want good games you are limited to very few hours per week. (weekends friend and mostly late afternoon to dawn) If you like to be treated well by staff...fugetaboutit.

Ok some thoughts: 1) California, I prefer northern California myself. Great games 24/7. Rarely tough with much more expendable fun money around. And to many that's what poker is there fun. Not nearly as many wannabe pukes with "entitlement disease" as Vegas(which you will find plenty of till 30-60 limits). Great people. Hang loose California style people. 2) Tunica, MS, Great games. Action not fully as ram n jam as Cal but very very beatable for a decent living. Comps up the ying yang. Room comps down to as little as 20.00 day, "buffet comp for how many sir" ? 3 times a day, no problem. Polite people. Competent staffs for sure. Really tho only two places to play, the Horseshoe is #1 then the Grand. So at times game selection can be less then optimal. This scores points for Cal. However in Cal I sometimes drove 75 miles traveling to 4 different places looking for the right game. And I was never more then 20 miles from home.

I personally would suggest a trip to all 3. Give yourself 1-2 weeks at each. Then evaluate. Vegas in my personal opinion has the worst games and the worst staffs in the country. I am embarrassed by some of the things I see both players and dealers do/say and get away with. Floor staff and management is not much better. Probably because of the pencil pushing accountants upstairs always on their asses for a profit. Vegas can be very hard on a persons soul. Ripoffs beware. There are so many railbirds and con artists out there it's no wonder why some people have such bad attitudes. If it sounds like I have an attitude for LV......................you're right! lol......but I'm trying to open your eyes to some of the reality of it too. Find a place where the games are good and they treat ya well.

regards
