When do we want to try to eliminate an opponent, and when do we want to keep them in the game? Can anyone give me some examples for both. Thanks.

Pre-flop, certain hands play well against many opponents (ex. JTs) while some play well against few opponents (ex. KK).

After a flop of Kh Qh 7c, the KK would like to raise to eliminate players who may draw out on them. A JT suited in hearts would like to keep as many players in as possible after a flop like this. The reason being is that his hand cannot win unless it hits (makes a straight or a flush) therefore...the more people who put money in the pot increase his pot odds. His raise 'on the come' would only get out those hands which he will beat IF he hits...certainly the opponent who flopped 3 kings isn't going to be raised out.

If the turn comes [Kh Qh 7c] 7d, then the KK wants to keep people in because his hand has become so strong and is less vulnerable to the flush or straight; perhaps by checking and giving a free card in hopes that a straight or flush card will result in him making more money on the river.

We want to eliminate an opponent when they have the best hand or are making a call that would be correct....You want to keep them in the game when they are making a call that is incorrect.

Eliminate opponents who can draw to hands that beat you. Keep in opponents who can "catch up" and still be behind. For instance if the board is JdQs2s and you are holding JcQc then you want to eliminate your opponents since there could be a lot of people drawing to straights and/or flushes and you want to make them pay as much as possible for their draws. If the board is JhQhQs and you hold the JcQc you don't want to eliminate them. You want somebody to catch a straight and somebody else to catch a flush because your tight will still win. Here is a good place to slowplay and give a free card that is of no help.
