pocket pair play, Sue, 23. Aug 2003 13:30 | ||

| I'm fairly new to the game and have come up against a play I would like advice on. With low pocket pair (say 2-6) and another pair comes on flop with no A,K, or Q, should I stay in for the possible fullhouse? | ||

| Hi Sue Not unless you think there is a reasonable chance that you have the best hand.....In order to make a full house you need to hit one of two cards out of 47 unseen cards...So you are 45-2 to make a full house....Those are very long odds and few pots have enough chips in them to warrant making a call with odds that long! Life is Good :-) Roy Cooke on 23. Aug 2003 13:30 Sue wrote: > I'm fairly new to the game and have come up against a play I would like advice > on. | I think Roy read your post wrong. You have a pocket pair and another pair comes on the flop, right? Whether you should call or not depends upon whether this two pair is top two pair or otherwise. What is the 3rd flop card? With the two pair, you have four outs for which the odds are abut 10.5 to one. There would have to be that many small bets in the pot to justify the call. If the two pair are close together, someone may have a draw to a straight. I will let Roy or someone take it from here. Don Quixote on 23. | Sue asked if she should draw to the fullhouse....I said no unless you felt there was a good chance the pair was good! I think that is correct! Roy Cooke on 23. What I liked about your response is that (while you touched upon them) you didn't confuse the issue with the normal mumbojumbo (position, pot odds, opponent tendencies). For a rank beginner, sticking to the "flop em (small trips) or drop em policy" is a good starting point. I think that you gave not only a correct answer, but more importantly the one which will do her the most good at this time. - Nathaniel Brous | ||
