The Value of Pocket 2's...., Eaglesfan1, 23. Aug 2003 02:05

I was recently in a limit tournament. Pretty far in the tournament, I have an average stack and am dealt pocket 2's. The table is pretty tight. The chip leader limps before me so I limp. Another limps after me and the big blind checks. 4 way flop K52 rainbow. Chip leader(aggressive) checks, I bet, player after me raises, Blind mucks, chip leader check/raises, I think for a minute, Couldn't bring myself to fold, so i raise the 4th raise, and the other guys have to call. Anyway the turn came a 9 and I couldn't bring myself to fold and was all in after 3 bets. River came a blank and the chip leader turned over KK, the second player turned over 55, and I turned over my 22 in shame... This hand left me wondering about the strength of 2's, I mean, certaintly there worth a limp at a tight table in ok postion right? I hit the best flop possible (well almost), but was still doubting if I had the best hand or not. By the way this hand was crazy I couldn't believe it, 3 people flopped sets...

Hi EaglesFan

Part of the problem with small wires pairs is they propensity to have an opponent flop set over set....It is also an issue with small suited connectors.

That said , they are playable in certain situations, your odds just need to be extended further than if you had 66.

Life is Good :-)

I've been here...in , last Thursday in a limit hold em tournement. similiar hand, I folded at the flop.......I think the hand is worth paying to see 5 cards.....once that K showed....as a rule, I try to play a pair of 7's or better.

One last comment, as you know, chip position is critical. If I had the chips, and I had respect from the option established, this changes the parameters. But 7out of 10 times I'm out at the flop woth that hand.

Eaglesfan1 your example doesn't really bring us any closer to understanding the strength of your hand in this situation. Rather, it brings about a strategic issue during the play of a tournament more clearly. With one limper in front of you in a limit holdem tournament I understand the temptation to call but you have your "tail in the wind" here . You are HOPING that others will fall in line behind you and limp along but it doesn't work out this way sometimes and that puts more of your chips in jeopardy preflop than you would like. You are also badly out of position. These factors coupled with the fact that players like to limp trap with big wired pairs preflop quite often would sway me towards a fold preflop with this hand. The strength of the actual holding 2,2 is not the issue here. You will need to flop a set to proceed with the hand. Once you get this flop you just go with it and deal with the outcome. Set over set over set is very rare indeed and you WERE UNLUCKY to have the hand play out in this fashion but you way want to take a closer look at your preflop decision. Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN

EAGLESF1, SHIT DOES HAPPEN, BUT IT WOULD HAVE GOOD FOR YOU TO HAVE RAISED PREFLOP TO FIND OUT WHETHER ANY ONE REALLY HAD SOMETHING. LJH
