Online Tells--Hand Analysis, mkpoker, 22. Aug 2003 22:21

There's been some discussion on this board about whether it's possible to deduce "tells" online. Here's one "online tell" I find highly reliable:

When a player raises instantly, indicating that he/she pre-clicked "raise any bet" in advance, it means he/she does NOT have a powerhouse hand. Think about it, if you have AA, you'll usually raise or reraise anything, but you'll take a moment to see what's gone on first! On the other hand, bad players who decide, "I'm going to try a steal this hand" may pre-click "raise" so they can fake strength by acting quickly and with authority.

Here's a situation from a stars 3/6 HE ring game where the correct read actually got me into trouble. I'd welcome others' comments about what I should have done here.

One off the button, I'm dealt AKo. All fold to me. I raise. The button reraises instantly. From the speed of his reraise, I deduce that he doesn't have a big pair (the online tell described above). Rather, he was hoping to steal the blinds with a positional raise. He probably didn't anticipate that I'd be in the hand at all. Blinds fold, I reraise (cap) hoping to take the pot right there. Opponent calls.

Flop comes 4h 9c Tc. Here's where I may have been overthinking the hand. I figure, "If he doesn't have a true raising hand, what could he have?" I start thinking about hands like QT, JT, 9T, T8--hands which could have been helped by this flop.

The pot contains 4+ BB at this point, and I'm pretty sure I'll win with either an A or K on the turn or river, so I'm not going to fold here. Instead, I resolve to check/call unless an A or K hits, in which case I'll raise for value.

On the flop I check. He bets. I call. Turn is Td [flop was 4h 9c Tc]. I check, button bets, I call. River is 8s. check/check. Opponent turns over 8cJc for two pair. My read was right--he overplayed pre-flop with a marginal hand. But he flopped an open-end straight flush draw and hit a pair on the river.

So, UPF team, what should I have done differently?

I find the opposite to be true. Players holding strong cards i.e. AA, AK. Have already selected the raise or the raise any option. I really can't see someone trying to steal it with a pre-raise option already clicked, unless he/she is an idiot, because thats a completely situational option that is best saved for the moment. I have seen it done, but not nearly as much as someone already hitting the raise option with a hand like AA.

I agree with Swagman. If you're holding any hand other than A-A, K-K, or A-K suited, you will more than likely wait until the action is on you before you click on the "raise any" option button.

I never use "raise any" when trying to steal a pot, Because If the player before you goes in and you raise your left looking like an idiot raising an all in with 72o,

I would say using the phrase "I Always" in reference to poker is a pretty good indicator I would "ALWAYS" want you at my table.

Mkpoker BE CAREFUL placing a lot of emphasis on this "tell" you have discovered. You might find that it a costly tell to bank on indeed!!!!! Just a thought. GRANT PITTMAN
