New additions to the library, suggestions?, palman, 22. Aug 2003 14:52

Championship NL & pot limit holdem -cloutier and mcevoy
championship omaha -cloutier and mcevoy
7 card stud for advanced- sklansky
high low split - zee
middle limit holdem-ciaffone
tournament poker for advanced players-sklansky.

Looking to branch into the omaha and stud games where through readings posts on cardplayer and here, I get the impression the bad players make more mistakes than in holdem.

My library is looking complete now (had 10 or so books before this, ToP and super system, etc)and I'm excited, have taken a week off of poker, gona do some reading and get back to the grind.

Anyone have any particular thoughts on any of the books received? Especially the stud and omaha books. Any other stud or omaha books worthwhile?

Thanks

You have a nice collection of books palman.

You were asking about the stud and Omaha books; I have both: seven stud for advanced players by (Sklansky, Malmuth, and Zee) , and Zee's book on Omaha 8/stud 8, and both books IMO are very helpful indeed.
Ray Zee is a well known player and his writings on his High-Low split games will make for a very good read.

You can also check out the works of Steve Badger through (I believe it's called) pokerportal.com for Omaha as well.

Actually, Steve Badger's writings can be found at his website. http://www.playwinningpoker.com/

As far as suggestions go, I got a lot out of Larry (Wanyo) Phillips two books (Zen/Tao of poker). These are not strategy books, just food for the mind. They are both very reasonable and can be found at your local bookstore. - Nathaniel Brous

"Food for the mind".........sounds interesting. I haven't read either of those books, how do you feel that they have helped your game Nathaniel? Do they put you in a positive mind-set......self control/discipline, and things like that?

Appreciate your thoughts here.

Hey Dave...and any interested. Many players "know" how to play a good game of poker, yet still rarely win. L.W.Phillips books explore the motivations of poker players and really gets into the poker mind. These books are designed NOT to teach you how to play, but rather to stop yourself from getting in the way of your winning. To answer your question Dave, yes it helped with those things, but even better, it gave me a better understanding of myself in relation to poker.

I truly wish that these books were out when I started playing. I think that anyone who has played for a while and still feels like something "is missing" should pick these books up. I did a review on the Tao of Poker (companion to Zen and the Art of Poker) on the UPF. It can be found in the archives. - Nathaniel Brous

I thought Zen And The Art of Poker was excellent. Not for everyone, but for me it really complements other works. Very well written and effective.

I haven't seen the other suggestions but saw that you were looking to stay away from hold'em books and lean toward omaha or stud books.

That said, I would suggest a couple of poker books which weren't about a specific form of poker at all. Killer Poker by JV and The Psychology of Poker by Schoonmaker. It's a people game. :)
