in general, what type of backgrounds do pit boss/floor manager/cardroom managers generally have? anyone know what a ballpark starting salary in vegas is for these positions?

i doubt that my com. sci/math degree is really applicable but i am considering a career shift and was wondering if they hire smart, trustworthy people of all backgrounds....

thanks in advance!

It would really be cool if cardrooms cleaned house at the top and hired smart, educated people. Why not hire an MBA or a systems analyst to run a major cardroom?

The hierarchy in casinos goes Floorperson then Pit Boss then Floor Manager (or whatever the casino calls that position), most of the pit critters you see fall under "Floorperson." Those that I have known or talked to either started as floorperson, dealer or something else. I believe you're looking at a starting wage in the $40k's for a ballpark, but I'm sure there are many variables (experience, where you work, etc.)

Maybe someone in the industry can offer more words? I'm merely an observer, albeit an active one.

Most pit bosses are promoted from floorpersons that were promoted from dealers. You would normally need several years of dealing experience to be promoted to the floor. Floorpersons usually make between $45,000 and $50,000 per year. Pit bosses normally make between $50,000 and $65,000 per year. I think the next progression usually is shift boss, followed by casino manager. Dealers depend on tips, so their wages vary. They usually make around minimum wage plus tips. Everyone is welcome to correct me as needed.
