Proper size of bets, Karpro, 21. Aug 2003 17:30

First of all, this is my first post but I've learned a lot just reading everyone's advice/ideas.

I read all kinds of theory on when to bet, raise, call, go all-in, etc..
But where can I get some strategies for how much?? Do you base your bet on percentage of pot, size of blinds, your stack, their stacks.

Any help on where to find some theory, ideas is greatly appreciated in advance.

Thanks

First, welcome to UPF! :-)

I assume you are asking about NL play...

Basically, it depends on the situation and how you might want your opponent to respond. Normally, I would raise pre-flop (if I am going to raise) between 3 and 4 times the size of the big blind. I try to do this consistently, so that my opponents never know what I am raising.

All in bets can really depend on what you want to accomplish. Most players see an all-in bet on the flop, turn or river as a bluff or despiration move. Often, if I've drawn the nuts, I will use the all-in because I think someone will see it as a bluff and call me with a strong second-best. Sometimes, I also use it when I DON'T want someone to call if I think he's weak or drawing and will not call a bet that big.

Another tactic I use often (if I am the bigger stack) is to bet the exact amount my opponent has in front of him (assuming the hand has gone heads-up). This can be very effective, as it seems to piss off a lot of people and cause them to think about something other than what I might be holding.

Anyway, that's just some ideas. I'm sure some of the more experienced players can give you much more.

I don't play any NL, but I love that "exact amount" strategy!

Yeah, it seems to work pretty well. We've had a couple of conversations about it here. It really gets you into somebody's head, and often causes them to make a bad call.

I have used a similar technique except I raise to the amount of the other player -1....I make him raise the last $1 all in. Little more of a mind game....

:) Yeah, I've heard of others who do that, too. Then they add a little jab like "I left you a dollar for the cab ride home."

LOL!
