| In the most recent issue of Cardplayer magazine, there is an article by Roy West titled, "It's tough to quit while you're losing, but sometimes you must". When I first read his article I thought, "pretty basic stuff", but actually, because I am a strong believer in what he had to say, I thought I would share it with you all. He spoke of the importance of discipline. I will give a shortened version from his article. He wrote: "Oftentimes you will see good players become bad players right before your eyes. Sometimes, the best player at the table becomes the worst player the very next day or even the next hour. A player may have taken some losses and now his nose is wide open and he's steaming. He starts playing long shots, trying to get even. He's lost. Good players giving up their discipline have blown off alot of their money. When you see it happening, you have an opportunity at adding to your bankroll. When you see it happening to "you", save your bankroll- Leave immediately. It's almost impossible to win consistently without discipline. (I am a firm believer in this). Knowing what to do while playing poker is not enough.....what is important is "doing it"! If you were winning or even in that game and you picked up a mediocre hand, your better judgement would tell you not to play that hand........and if you are exercising self-discipline, the hand will not be played. Discipline will decide how well you play. If you are a solid, skillful player, but today you give up your discipline, than today you *are* a sucker. It doesn't matter if you're a world-class player, because it doesn't matter how well you *can* play.......it matters how well you *do* play. Sometimes, you'll just have to know when to leave a game a loser." Roy West. (volume 16: No 18, Aug.29, 2003) There's more in the article that he covers and it is definitely worth reading in its entirety......and then reading it again......as it is the utmost important factor of being a consistent winner regardless of how skillful you may be. 4 POKER | ||

I chose to post up Roy Wests' article because before I went pro, the #1 factor that left me losing most of the times was strictly do to a lack of self-discipline. I was skillful, I had tremendous reading abilities, and I always chose to play in games that were really good for me, but my discipline skills were lacking to say the very least and it was a real shame, it really was. I knew that before I even considered of going pro, I would have to have discipline every single time I sat down and I would actually talk to myself just to reassure that it was always a part of my game.....at all times. When I feel that I am not exercising that factor to the fullest.....I leave the game. But those times are few and far between now because I chose to make it the most important part of my poker game, plain and simple. That is probably the main reason why I advoacte the importance of having discipline so much. I've been on the other side and it doesn't work......not for me......not for anyone. So you are definitely not alone on that Nathaniel, but if you are becoming more aware of its importance, and can "apply" it.......than you have accomplished a very big part of the game, and you are on your way to winning poker. If you take it seriously, it will work. (it worked for me)! Take care. 4P- | ||
