I recently made it to the final table of a local tournament that started with 88 players. I was the short stack with enough chips to cover one big blind and one small blind. Unfortunately, I drew the big blind when we drew for seats

I picked up 8-6 unsuited. The small blind called me, but didn't raise. I then raised all in with my last couple chips. He called and won.

My thought in raising was, I was heads up with another random hand. If the flop missed me, even if he didn't raise, I would have to see the small blind all in against the entire table. Why not try to double up here. If I could get through the blinds with chips, the possibility was I could go up the pay chain.

Should I have held on to my last two chips to see the small blind?

He is going to call your raise with any 2 cards. I would have checked and bet the flop almost no matter what, unless 8 or 6 was somehow top pair. That way if he flops nothing, he at least has a better chance of folding. If you do pair something, he will likely bet your hand for you to get you all in. Other than that, you really don't have a choice but to play this hand.

That's a good point. Even if you plan on going all-in, it's a good idea to give your opponent two chances to fold.

But congratulations on making the final table. Maybe next time you'll win the tourney!
