The human brain reduces in efficiency without breaks and sleep....Many poker players push their brain to inhuman lenths...this is VERY destructive on their long term results....

Keep fresh...Take breaks...And don't play dead tired....Your bankroll will appreciate it!

Great post as usual Roy!

I was wondering if anyone has ever done a scientific study on this. Having never played in a tournament that goes over a period of days I don't know how this would effect one. The reason I say this is that I have a background in ultra endurance sports having completed the Ironman triathlon and several 24+ hour long adventure races I have a decent amount of experience performing under the effects of fatigue. I'msure my mind isn't as sharp but my body sure holds up well. I've also thought a lot about tournament nutrition. Do any of you pros out here pay close attention to caloric intake as well as hydration during an event of this legnth?

Just being a sports geek here, sorry,

John

That's a very good point about multi-day tournaments. I bet diet could have a large effect over a 3 day tournament. A cup of coffee may help you stay alert for a couple hours, but too much caffeine and a poor diet over a couple days can really destroy your concentration.

In endurance events caffine deffinatley has its place. One cup (150 mg af caffine) will keep you alert for a while but caffine also act as a diahretic and can induce frequent bathroom trips if you aren't careful. lat in a session a bit of caffine can really help. If you decide to use caffine I think a coke is a better bet. Coke has about half the amount of caffine as coffee and the simple carbohydrates in coke will metabolize faster into your suystem and give you a bit of a bosst faster. HOWEVER; once you start on simple carbs you must continue taking them in slowly over time to avoid the effects of insulin build up.

Its bets to experiemnt with this in an unimportant event like a late night game with friends to see how your body reacts to this kind of thing. You wouldn't want a case of the runs late on day 2 right!

LOL. Have you seen the pros? It looks like a pack of reds and a few beers will get most of them through the day.

A few beers will get "Most" of them through the day?..........NO, that is not true by any means Tex. What you may observe by a few of the pros on television is a very small percentage of the professional poker players that are out there today. I know many, many pro players (myself included), and from all parts of the country as well......and none of them depend on, nor do they induldge in ANY alcohol during their sessions. Please don't be mislead or misguided by what you "see" as to be true as opposed to what actually IS true, when talking about the majority. The numbers are not even close.
