advice on playing a monster flop, Flatout_Mainiac, 20. Aug 2003 20:51

I was unsure as to what to do on the flop on the following hand. I think the way I played it may have cost me a couple of bets (though I ain't complaining)

Preflop - i get dealt pocket 3's. 3 limps to me, I limp, folds to button, sb raises(weak player good chance he doesn't have a high pair), bb cold calls, called to me, I call, button folds (so I got button). 6 to see flop.

Flop- JcJs3s. I could ask for a better dream flop except maybe something below Jacks as the board pair. PF raiser checks (good he has a higher pair or AK and goes back into weak mode), BB who is weak leads, call by solid, 2 calls, I raise (is this a good play or should I slow play this?). table calls up to the guy to my right who 3 bets, I call (should i cap? i figured a bunch of folks thought they were good here and i wanted the turn bets). The remainder call. 6 to river.

Turn - 7s I see this as good since I didn't think anyone was bad enough to play J-7 (but we are in low limits). checks to me, I bet, PF raiser calls, fold, solid player folds, call, call.

River- 8c - check to me, i bet, PF raiser calls, 3 bettor on flop call. I win a healthy pot....

I just want some opinions on my play as I was wondering if my fear of a better FH was warrented and do you think the i should have slowplayed the flop to get a chance to raise on the river.

Playing your hand fast on the flop is ok here but keep in mind you have the button and are last to act so you can be a little more educated about what your opponents hold by the time the action gets around to you. Be aware of the player that flat calls the flop. He may have nothing and is chasing to hit an overcard or he may have a jack and think he is trapping. You have flopped a huge hand here BUT remember that you are still quite vulnerable . A jack or a running pair kills your hand and those players that have pocket pairs have 4 cards to hit against you on the turn and river to beat your hand. It's nice to get the hands that are drawing almost dead to you ie: AK to put money in the pot but they will put very little in compared to those players with over pairs to the board or a jack. Play the hand fast and go for the big money here. You will get lots of action from a jack(perhaps 2 players have a jack!!!) Don't let the players who can beat you take a shot at you for nothing....make them PAY!!!!!!! GRANT PITTMAN

FM,

I would play the hand hard right on the flop, and continue with the betting on the turn as well. However......if the turn or river card brings the case Jack, OR if the board pairs the *turn card* on the river, depending on how the betting went on the flop, you may be beaten now by Jacks full. But as long as the board remained clean, or what looks clean to you, then play it extremely fast.

4P-
.

Hi Flatout-Maniac....I like that name :-)

I would play the hand fast...The hand can still be beat by higher wired pairs...with 6 players in for a raise the pot is quite large.....

When you flop an underfull in a volume pot it is likely that you will get action playing it fast and get many bets from any player(s) that have flopped trip Jacks.....

So fire at will :-) I think you did good!

The Mainiac part is related to being from Maine....I didn't get the play on words as it relates to a poker "maniac" until well after I chose it as a poker name and learned poker jargon...I figure now it is just a bonus at the table and may give a skewed initial table image to my opponents (man, I read way to much into things).

Thanks for the response.

I actually get the opposite impression at online tables. If I see someone with a name that includes "tilt" or "maniac" I tend to expect they are probably pretty tight players trying to create the illusion of being loose.

But I don't think it makes a big difference, you have to form a real opinion after playing with someone for awhile. It might give you an edge against some opponents, and any edge is useful!
