What are they grumbling about?, spawgan, 20. Aug 2003 19:27 | ||

| This is a hand that I played this weekend. After I won the pot, the two other players were grumbling how could I call and then make the bets I made. I cant figure out why it was wrong. Maybe I figuring things wrong. If so please tell me. Maybe its sour grapes on their part, if so please tell me. Game is 3-6-12. I am in the SB and get 33, it is 2 bet two me and I call, BB (who would always raise pre-flop, miss the flop and fold) makes it 3 bets, 4 others call, and I called. Flop came off 9-4-Q two clubs. I check with every intention of folding, but everyone checks around. Turn is a 9, no clubs. I check, player to my left bets out, one caller and I call. At this point no one has given me reason to believe that they had a Q or a 4. River comes 3c, I check next player bets 12, player 2 raises to 24, I reraise to 36 player next to me caps it at 48, call, call. Both players had flushes (one a-7 one j-8) and I take the pot with my boat. What did I do so wrong, other than take their money, that had them grumbling. btw - this hand put both players on tilt, especially if was in the hand, and it made the table profitable for me. | ||

| I probably would have grumbled. the only thing you "did" that made them mad was call a bet with a pair on the board. Someone could have made trip 9s - in fact, someone probably did, you didnt mention their cards. Once the 3 hits the river, you've made a boat, but someone could have a 9s over anything boat. However, you weren't too nuts. If no one bet on the flop, it's unlikely they made a boat with the turn, which no one raised. So I'd say, yeah, I'd sit there shell shocked too, if I had been slow playing top pair, or had made trip 9s, and pocket 3s win a monster pot. But you got one free card, giving you two pair, which warranted a call to see, I suppose. But that's a risky call too. What cards did they show? | ||

| Spawgan they are grumbling because they lost their money and you will hear a lot more grumbling as long as you keep playing poker. It will NEVER stop!!! As for this hand, you may want to reconsider your play on the turn. It is very common for players to check a pair on the flop especially if there has been a lot of preflop betting as there was with this hand. You are so likely to be beat on the turn with only a 3 to win this pot for you and the pot simply isn't big enough to proceed on the turn. A check fold was probably in order here but I must say you caught the perfect card on the river. Just keep in mind that the hand worked out perfectly for you but you did need a small miracle. Notice that if you hit the other 3(whatever suit was left that didn't complete the flush) you get no action on the hand on the river even though you spiked the 2nd best card in the deck for you. Be careful proceeding in pots when the odds don't warrant you being involved. Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN | ||

| You shouldn't have seen the flop. Investing what you know will be 2.5 bets with a small pair in the earliest position is not what you want to be doing. That said, calling the bet on the turn is also pretty shady. There are a lot of hands that beat you, and you're drawing to 2 outs if you are beaten Maybe you call one bet, but once it is bet and called, you have to think that your hand is no good. Making these calls WILL lose you money in the long run. Even if you aren't, someone might make their flush, or hit one of their flush cards to pair. If you're willing to play on the turn, you should bet it out yourself, representing that you just made trips with the 9's. I wouldn't suggest it with 4 other people in the pot, but it is a reasonable play from the blinds when a card other than the top card pairs on the turn. Be careful, this is employed by a lot of players, and as a result, a lot of players won't believe that you have the 9. Also don't even try it against calling stations. The less in the pot, the better for this move. I wouldn't try it against more than 3 opponents. Lee | ||

| Honestly.........I don't like your call there. I wouldn't put in two bets cold with 3-3, but that's just me. Often......players will check a flop like that even if they do have a piece of it because they are either trying to check-raise it (by gaining better position and narrowing the field)....or they are trying to gain information by checking it and seeing who will be betting it, and/or, if it now gets raised, etc. etc.........and that may give them just enough info on whether they are going to continue to be a part of the pot. So just because the flop was checked.......it doesn't necessarily mean that your small pair was good, and against a larger field, that play that you made on the turn will be a tougher one to accomplish that will allow you to take the pot right there. (just something to consider). And IMHO........when you make a call like that pre-flop, will often tend to make some players (who may not be quite experienced enough) to carry through with calling bets when the hand doesn't warrant a call, or....... betting a hand without really undrstanding it's potential to be beat already. That is why calling 2 bets cold with 3-3 is *usually* going to be a mistake, especially if you compund the mistakes even more post-flop. You won the pot, and that's all fine and dandy......but you got lucky to hit a 2-outer as well. But regardless of whether it was good or not......when there are players' in your game that chose to ask you, "how could you call and how could you bet"?.........is their way of possibly educating a player....... (dumb on their part). 4P- | ||

| Thanks for the feedback. I guess to start with, the thing got me confused was that both these guys are on only a flush draw as it turns out when the turn bet is made. Also neither of these guys had been the raiser pre-flop and gave me any reason to believe they had the trip 9's or one of the overpair. I didn't mention this but one of the One of the two players left in (the caller on the flop raise) was chasing flushes all night playing any two suited cards and if he managed to pair one of them with two of his suit on the board, then he almost always automatically raised and all he did was call. Second, while I will admit I forgot to take into account the fact the BB behind me would most likely reraise the pre-flop, I was thinking for 2 bets I would see the flop, see if I could make a set and fold if I couldn't, particularly witht he small pair. Once I was in for 2 bets, I figure I would just call the third. If someone had bet the flop, I would have folded, but when I got the free card, I stuck around. Third, I guess I may not be figuring the pot odds and implied odds correctly, but there was already a substantial pot (Close to 90.00 from Pre-flop betting) and after the turn bets are called there is a 108.00 dollar pot and if I made my draw I then there would have been 144.00 after the betting. I figured when I called the 6 dollar bet I thought I was getting proper odds to make that call. I also thought this in light I did not believe anyone had the other 9 and I believed that gave me 4 cards that completed my boat. Once again, this is probably my rank inexperience speaking, but further comment would be appreciated and helpful. Also, could it have been a better move to have raised on the turn. If the first bettor had one of the overpairs or the 9 then he probably would have raised and then I would have known. | ||
