This may seem obvious...but this thought needs to be in players heads at all times.....If you think there is a chance that you are drawing dead......You need to extend your odds SIGNIFICANTLY!

Roy,

I love reading you recent insights but could you expand on this one some, as a new player I unfortunately have no idea what you are talking about.

Drawing dead is drawing to a hand that if it hits it will certainly be beaten.

Another use of the term is the situation where there are zero (0) cards that can improve your hand or any card that can come will cause someone elses hand to beat yours. For example, your opponent is showing quads on his board in 7-stud and you are drawing to, at best, a flush. That is drawing dead.

Hence, the lament, "I was drawing dead and got there."

It means that if someone may already have a hand better than the one you are drawing to, you should extend your odds a lot. For example, if the board is paired, you need much better odds to draw to your straight because someone may already have a full house.

This doesn't always apply to just drawing hands though. If you are heads up against someone who flopped top set and you are drawing to aces up with middle pair and an ace kicker, you have to catch runner runner for quads in order to win. These situations also apply if you are drawing to overcards. Your overcards might make someone else a straight, a flush, or two pair, which is why it is dangerous to draw to overcards in all but the best of situations.

"Drawing Dead" also refers to the situation when a player has landed a "whale of a hand", ... a real monster, and is slowplaying it to allow other players to get a drawing hand that will entice them into betting their hand but still losing. (eg) You have 99 and the flop has come 8 8 9 with two hearts. Slowplaying this to let another heart or fill a str8 or give a str8 draw is pretty standard fare, ... but isn't pretty at the showdown ... lol. Just watch out for the guy holding 66 ... ***grin***. Drawing Dead can be an unsuspecting state until the showdown at the end.

Knowing is half the battle, ... but learning is the war. Thanks for the quote! It appears I have fans, ... and I will have to figure out why soon ... lol.

Flint and Scarlet were characters in the GI Joe cartoon, which was always stating that Knowing was half the battle.

Geez Roy, you just squeeze the fun out of everything. Next thing you will be telling us not to call on the river in stud when we are beaten on the board.

The above is not drawing dead, but rather calling stupid.

I generally never draw to a straight or a flush if the board is paired on the flop with any of the top 5 cards in rank and the side card is also top 5 in rank. Examples: AAK AKK AAQ AQQ KKQ KJJ K1010 QQJ JJ10 - you get the point. Especially in raised pots there is just too large a chance of someone already having a full house, and if they don't have it already, that they might get there, this prevents you from going headlong into aces full or (gulp) quads. Basically if there is a pair on the flop and the cards are a hand someone is likely to play (even suited connectors) like a 887 flop, you have to be careful. However if I have AhKh and the flop comes 8h8s2h, then I'll probably hang around ;)
