Playing Multi tables, WilliamS, 20. Aug 2003 07:46

| I play on UB. I've been doing well playing 1 game at a time but I see a lot of players that I have noted as SOLID playing 2, 3 , even 4 tables at once. I totally understand the concept here, but I haven't had any luck at it in VERY limited experience. I usually play short handed tables and within 10 minutes I usually have the players pigeonholed into some kind of category. Playing short handed a lot of my decisions are based on this "read". I simply find it hard to distinguish the players playing more than one table. My questions are 1) You multi table players, are you playing by a set strategy or are you using reads of your opponents play from past experience?Obviously, with time I will have played with the majority of the players at a previous time and therefore already have a read on them. 2) How do you handle the screens? Do you use the mini-view? 3) How much do you feel like you give up playing at multiple tables? For example the added distractions of having 2 playable hands at once; the screen changing right about the time you were raising on one screen and needing to fold on the other, etc. etc. For now, I'm sticking with one table and my experimenting will be with lower limits. Thanks for your help Will | ||

Roy Says: I use reads from my opponents past experience...That said it is much more difficult and requires more concentration if I am playing two games at once. Players that have a formulation approach to poker do much better relatively playing multiple games online. That said, the best players in the world all read thier opponents! > 2) How do you handle the screens? Do you use the mini-view? Roy Says: Put two monitors next to each other so that you can visualize both games at all times....It will help your focus. > 3) How much do you feel like you give up playing at multiple tables? If you make one bet an hour in one game and 3/4 of a bet an hour in each game playing two games.....You will make more money playing two games at once! > For now, I'm sticking with one table and my experimenting will be with lower > limits. Roy Says: It takes practice to play two games at once....Get good and familiar with one game and then trial two: Good Luck :-) Roy Cooke > Thanks for your help > Will

| Definitely use the Mini-View. You can fit three games at once on the screen and keep track of what's going on in all of them. Nice feature at UB is that when it's your turn in any of the games, the window automatically activates. Anyway, you will lose more in a tough game than a loose low limit game because reads matter more. In the loose games, I don't really worry too much about reads, I just worry about what my outs are and how much is in the pot, or if I have a made hand I worry about the likelihood of it holding up against x opponents. | ||

| By the way, when I say you lose more in a tough game, I just meant in comparison to if you were focusing on just that one table. For instance, in one loose game you expectation might drop from 2.2 BBs per hour to 1.8 BBs an hour. However, if you are playing tougher tables, your expectation won't be as high in the first place, and it will go down more because you have to make more tricky and aggressive plays which are more dependent on reads. | ||

| Andy Glazer's newest article covers this topic. It's definately worth a read, you can find it at www.cardplayer.com. Lee | ||

| I find that I make about 80% of my average for each table when playing 2 tables instead of one. It drops to about 70% when playing 3. This however translates to 160% and 210% of my hourly rate. I think this is because you can't track the other players as well and I don't play as many opening hands because of this. I will fold KQ suited to a raise when I don't know the raiser, but if I had been watching the table the whole time I would have known the player raises with 44 or 66. I wish poker stat would use time in/ time out instead of hours played so you could track stats like this easier. Guinnessman | ||
