A good story., Paul Stine, 19. Aug 2003 23:51

I decided to stay up last night (Tuesday) and watch the last Paradise Poker WPT Freeroll tourney of the night. Why? Because despite my best, desperate attempts (you know, sitting on my duff and hoping to get lucky; kinda like my play) I had been unable to win a seat and I hoped to, maybe, pick up a thing or two about the play in these tourneys in case I can win my way into one.

At the same time, I was playing in a low limit ring game; kind of dashing back and forth watching to see if the freeroll had started. It seems that one of the ten winners of seats didn't show up. The floorman waited for a bit and then announced that they would find an alternate to play in the seat of the missing player.

(Foreshadowing, your key to quality literature.)

Sensing an opportunity to r00l everyone that didn't win a seat today, I typed into the chat box (of the freeroll table,) "I volunteer to play ... lol. " I followed that with, "Really, I will." I went back to my table to check my big blind (rags, as usual) and after folding my hand to a raise and reraise, a message box popped up inviting me to the tournament.

Mega-Dingz!!!!

I check the tourney table and click on the "Sit Down" button and I'm in! Woo Hoo! I called a friend who had missed a seat earlier and told him about my good fortune. (He got sucked out on the river by a three outer after flopping top pair.) My friend says that he will log on and watch from his house.

Now, the tourney starts and I get the usual assortment of crap. The other players are firing like it was the last day before they changed the menu at the Alamo (If you know what I mean, just before they switched it to Mexican food; the Gen. Santa Anna Special.) Having nothing to get shot over I hunker down and wait. And wait. And wait. Davy Crockett is dead and Jim Bowie is going fast, Sam Houston is back east trying to gather re-enforcements. You get the picture?

Anyway I find a hand I like and raise, get called, move in on a favorable flop and my hand holds up. I am not the smallest stack at the table, but I'm not doing so good; but I *am* alive (which is more than I can say for Davy and Jim at this point.) Soon three players mix it all up with TT, 88 and AQ; AQ wins and we are down to four. More shots fired and another hero bites the San Antonio dust. I fold more than a chinese launderman on 5-cent shirt day. Then, much to my wondering eyes should appear, a pot in which the two big stacks get it all in. Two men enter, one man leave.

Now, I'm heads up with 1050 chips of 10,000. A fair fight, 1:9, I have 'em just where I want 'em. Yeah, right! OK, time to see if this baby has another gear.

I proceed to put on a dazzling display of luck, err, I mean skill, the likes of which no one, living or dead, has probably ever seen.

The first hand, heads up, I double.
Then I fold.
Then I win (net) 600.
Then I win (net) 1300.
Then I win (net) 1150
Then I win (net) 250
Then I win (net) 1750

The crowd senses an upset in the making

Then I fold
Then I fold

OK, maybe not.

Then I win (net) 1000
Then I win (net) 500
Then I win and have all the chips.

The crowd is going wild. It is a Cinderella story. Former assistant greenskeeper, now Masters' Champion. (OK, I might be exaggerating the crowd reaction a little.)

12 hands to go from a 9:1 chip dog to the winner.

Ten men enter, one man leave.

So now I'm qualified to play on Saturday. The winner on Saturday (maximum 50 entrants) wins an estimated $7000 package that includes entry into the WPT event at the Borgata in Atlantic City, air fare and accomodations.

Now, *that* is a good story.

I was just reading the full details on Paradise Poker and it seems I have at worst a 1 in 10 shot at winning one of the main prize packages (entry, et al) and will win at least $25. (Hey, 25 bucks is 25 bucks.)

That is a lot better equity than the 1 in 50 chance I thought I had.

If all else fails, follow the directions. (RTFM)

How do you have a 1 in 10 shot, at worst? Are they taking one for every 10 entrants???
