Online limits question, Rookee, 19. Aug 2003 17:56

I've been playing at Paradise Poker on the .50 / 1.00 tables, and have been breaking about even. As a beginner, I don't feel that I have any business going to higher limits just yet, but here's what I don't understand. No matter what your strategy, you have no control over the game, everyone bets on about everything and the pots are between 6.00 and 12.00. I could move up to the 1.00 / 2.00 tables for about the same size pots, but the blinds will eat up my bankroll quicker. Is it worth the move to play against a slightly better group of players? Thanks for all your advise do far, you've all been a great help.

Moving up will probably be a disastor for you. If you aren't winning at the lower limits, you'll do no better at 1/2 and probably run through your cash quicker. Not trying to be mean, but you probably need to work on your game some more. Those games can be beaten with a tighter syle of play and a good understanding of odds.

Rookee,
I was in your exact situation about two months ago. I found that by moving up to 1/2, playing becomes a lot easier because there arn't eight callers in a pot. I tried my hand at 2/4 and i found that the poeple there seem to be the same skill level, just a little richer. I suggest trying it a few times and see how you do, the blinds arn't that much more and you might find it profitable...it's worked for me.

Good Luck,
Jon

Have you tried Sit and Gos?

For the price of $6 or $11, easy to lose that amount at the 0.50/1 table, you get so see alot of action. Helps you play solid poker. You might even win some.

I had no success at ring games and have done fairly well at SnGs.

I second this opinion. The sheer volume of hands played for the investment makes this a very attractive approach. I favor the NL SnG's at PartyPoker and am having reasonable success there (being in the money 1/3 of the time).

Just a quick look at the math: Entry - $6. Payouts - $25, $15 and $10
Out of 10 games played I can expect to finish 3rd at least twice, 2nd once, and flat out win it once for a total take of $70. I would have spent $60 to enter, so I see a net profit of $10. Not great, but the experience has been invaluable.

I would suggest trying the sit n go's, but you have to realize it's an entirely different game than the ring games. Especially the party poker ones. The blinds get raised so quickly that your style of play has to be entirely different.

I actually prefer the sit n go's to ring games, so I'm not trying to persuade you not to play them. I'm just mentioning it because learning to play the sit n go's won't necessarily make your ring game better.
