Need advice on a run of bad cards., Jeff Hansen, 19. Aug 2003 12:52 | ||

| First off let me give some background info. I have been playing poker seriously for about 2 months. I have read all the required books, and feel like I play fairly solidly considering my lack of actual playing experience. I play at a local B&M a minimum of 30 hours per week. When not playing I read and practice at home. Now here's my dilema. Over the last week or so I have been on a really bad run of cards. When I have gotten playable hands, the flop seems to miss me by a mile. When I do get a big hands they seem to get rivered every time.(one session last week I had three full houses beaten by bigger full houses on the river). I realize that runs of bad cards are inevitable. However I am having trouble figuring out the best way to handle a bad run. I guess I am lucky in that I am not a player that will go on tilt. What I have done so far is when I see that it is going to be another one of those days, I will tighten up alot and only play premium hands. Should I maybe cut down my hours per week, or maybe just take a break for a couple of days? I realize the run of bad cards will end eventually(I hope LOL). I am just having a diffucult time mentally figuring out the best way to deal with it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for letting me vent. Jeff Hansen | ||

| I am currently in the same situation. Playing only premium hands. My biggest fear now is being "gunshy" and not wanting to play anything but AA and KK!! I started on the 3/6 tables and now am down to the 1/2 tables. All this after doing quite well for a couple of months. This "slump" has been for about 4-5 weeks now. All my playing is online. I have taken some good suggestions from here: paruse the archives (outstanding info!), and just ordered the book on low limit games. Looking forward to better days! Kyle | ||

| If you play solid poker then you dont need to change anything. Runs of bad cards are inevitable and you just have to tough it out, remember you wont be worrying when you hit a run of good cards ! Just carry on playing good cards and you will be fine but always bear in mind that if you are playing well then people are going to draw out on you more than you on them, as you will usualy be the one who is in front and they will have to draw out to beat you. If you are getting your money in with the best of it over the long haul you will take the money. There are a lot of reasonable poker players out there who cannot handle the swings in the game ( remember it is all part of the game ! ) dont be one of them keep at your game and you will win. Poker results are not based on hands, sessions, weeks or even months it is the long haul solid play that takes down the money ! Hope it gets better soon ! Chasepoker | ||

| Coming off this same situation I advise the following; 1: Tighten up your starting hand requirements 2; Take some time off from poker. Good luck, John | ||

| I can totally empathize with your situation. I recently began reading "The Psychology of Poker" and one concept in that book flickered a lightbulb on - and that was to really 'listen' to what the other players are telling you with their bets and their betting patterns. For instance - your getting beat by better fulls - if you go back and try to recreate the play, you may see that your opponent was clearly telling you h/she had you beat. When this happens, and you clue into it, you have to be able to lay your hand down. This isn't always the case, but often it is. Hope that helps. Maud | ||

| hi jeff, 1. Take a break and come back to it after a couple of days. i have been there and it seems to work. 2. Play in lower limits just to relax. The 4Cent/8cent at pokerstars was relaxing. Raise 16cents and every one folds. Gets back some confidence and its fun. | ||
