Please tell me if this was a correct play!, Machinegun68, 19. Aug 2003 12:39

Some background: I play in a biweekly home game, either $1/$2 hold-em or dealer's choice. Last night played all night. Eventually around 12:30 AM it got to be heads-up, me and the other solid player in my group. We were alternating 2 hands of $1/$2 HE and 2 hands of 7 card stud each dealing round.

I should mention here that we play an unusual rule that I'm not sure if I like or not called "Gentleman's No-Limit." This means that the limit is usually $1/$2, but a player may declare All-in at any time with any amount *if he gets a caller*. I may declare All-in, but if I get no takers on the offer, I am obligated to only bet the maximum bet. What do you guys think of this system? It does tend to tip the strength of your hand if you desire to move all-in, although I've done it with hands like 83o to take the pot right there if the other guy's weak.

Anyway, it's about 5:00 AM and we have been grinding each other heads-up for around 5 hours. The game is 7 card stud. We are both exhausted and can barely see the cards straight. I am deal As - Ad - 4d with the As as my door card. My buddy is showing 8h as his door card. I move all-in. He Calls!!!!!
This is about the 8th time I have tried to move all-in on him that morning. This is the first time he had even considered calling. But he does it! And of course flips over 8h - 6h - Th for a solid flush draw.

Who is the favorite here? My Aces or his 3 hearts? Of course I lost. He caught another heart immediately on 4th street and my heart sunk. I collected another pair of Queens to make Aces Up. Of course his heart comes on 6th street. 4 more outs for me to make a boat and it didn't happen. Should I be mad at myself for this all-in call? Was I mathematically correct to go all-in over the top? What do you guys think about this all-in move?

I should mention, that at the point where I went all in with split Aces against his 8h door card, we we very evenly stacked. The winner of the hand would have doubled up and won. My all-in move made damn sure that this was the last hand. Which makes me even more skeptical of my move there. Thanks for any comments you guys might have.

You should win some 65% of the time (65:35). I would say it was the right play but then I would of wanted it over with too.

lol Dr. Monkey!

Anyway, I thought that I was a slight (55%) favorite or something to win that hand. Very borderline decision. Now that I know that I was closer to a 66% favorite I know that I did the right thing. Besides, it got the game over with. Oh well. I ended up $5 on the night but that all-in loss at 5 AM was still brutal.
Good Luck all.

i dont think this was a good play at all considering ur risky your entire stack to try to win $2. not sure how much u had in ur stack but it prolly was alot compared to the $1-$2 limit. whethere u were a favorite in the hand once you moved in was beside the point, you shoud not have made the allin bet to begin with.

You went all in on a pair of Aces and he called with a Flush draw? Sounds like you were both tired and just wanted to finish the game.
