| Hi All, I have Sklansky's Theory of Poker and Hold'em for Advanced Players. I got both books about a month ago. Previously I have and read Warren's How to Win at Texas Holdem, and the little bettors Guide to Texas Holdem. My problem is: Are these books for B&M only? I had been doing fairly good until I started reading these books. I am in a constant slide for the last month or so. Oh, I do have an up day where I win $50 or so (2 in the last month), but most days the loss is that. Today I sat in on 75 hands, played 6 (been playing only premium hands cause I am not sure now what I am doing wrong), played 2 to the river (folding the rest), and one one. The table was the 1/2 at Party. Any ideas? Kyle | ||

| The problem with Theory of Poker and Hold'em for Advanced Players is that they are aimed at much higher limit games. For a 1/2 game I suggest you read "Winning low limit hold'em" by Lee Jones. Wouldn't hurt to browse the archives of this forum either. | ||

| I would agree w/ Dez that Lee Jones' book is your best bet at this limit. Many of the concepts Sklanski deals w/ are useless against low limit games opponents, because they are based on deception and your opponents are barely thinking about how they play their cards let alone how you play yours. Hope that helps. Lee | ||

| Just ordered Lee's Book on low limit holdem as you and Dez suggested. I like to play the 3/6 tables, but have been doing so poorly that if I want to feed my poker craving I have been going to the 2/4 and recently the 1/2 tables - because my money lasts a little longer;^) Thanks for the helpful ideas. | I've had the same problem. I think for me the problem has been is that I am still trying to learn how to apply all this newly learned wealth of information from books and the generous experts here to my game. I know the things I've learned about poker recently will help me in the long run and will eventually be a powerful tool in my game. I consider these short term losses as the cost of education and one day it will turn around and I will be a much better player than when I just played on instinct and common sense. | ||

| Kyle- 6 hands out of 75 is very tight in any non-wild low limit game. it's easy to settle into "weak tight" after several bad beats, or a long run of second bests. Fight the feeling! I somehow turned my at least decent poker game into sit and wait for the nuts a couple years ago. needless to say the profit's didn't start rolling in at that point. looking back I swear that style isn't even a step above mongoloid calling stations. Now I'm 10X more aggressive(probably way too much so) and I'll even throw in a couple low% pure bluffs or other wildman plays on top of all that just to keep myself from falling into that trap again. | ||

| I'm not a big fan of low limit because it is hard to play correctly and it turns into a long grind. If you want to have some fun playing NL then try the low buy in Sit n Go tourneys online. It's a great way to learn how to be an aggressive player and really beat up a table. You also get the chance to play against a full table then gradually go short handed to heads up if you stay in. That teaches you what cards are really worth depending on the number of hands dealt. | ||

| Maybe you are playing too tight. In those low limit games, if they are very loose, try playing some weaker hands like suited connectors from mid to late position. If the flop gives you something and the pot odds are worth chasing it, stay in. Otherwise don't hesitate to fold. | ||
