| Need some advice here because I always seem to get burned. Here is the situation - no raises pre flop, I have a AQ offsuit. Flop comes A J x rainbow. I bet, 1 player calls, 4th street comes x - I make a good sized bet, guy calls, river comes an A , I make a pot sized bet - after a min the guy calls and shows JJ for a full house and I get hosed ..... How should I have played this? | ||

| Hi Kurt I do not know your position or other details of this hand....But sometimes all you can do is all you can do...You are just beat and can't get away from the situation...What you can do is play the next hand correctly and don't let losing a hand cause you to play poorly! | Thanks - I think thats what it was - just a bad beat. But the other info on the hand is that I was in early position either in the BB or just 1 to the left(and I always seem to have problems playing from this position) | ||

| There is a very big difference between playing that hand from the BB or UTG. In my opinion, from UTG you should've raised and eliminated marginal hands. That play wouldn't have helped on this hand but it is imperative in my opinion to only play PREMIUM cards from up front and always show aggression with them. (This may help your results from this position) If you were in the BB, my question is did he raise preflop? If he did you have to be careful even though you flopped top pair good kicker because you could very well be up against 2 pair or trips on this flop. If he didn't, more times than not, if an ace hits on the flop you are a huge favorite to beat his JJ. He was just lucky enough to trip up on you. The ace hitting you on the river is just a very painful card for your bankroll. Thats my take Will | ||

| Kurt you didn't mention what game you were playing but it sounds like no limit holdem so I will assume this. When you hold a strong ace in no limit and you bet when there is an ace on the flop and get called you need to proceed with some caution. This is especially true if the board doesn't show a lot of draw potential. Remember that your opponent has to realize you could have an ace so when he calls your bet on the turn you may be in some trouble. He was waiting til the river to let you know how strong he was I assume and then got scared I guess. I think that a check on the river is a good play IF you both have a lot of chips since there is still a chance you are being trapped here and you don't want to commit your stack to the hand when there is a reasonable chance you are beat. However if you or your opponent have a small amount then you should get it in the pot on the river. He WILL call you with a weaker ace and if he only has a small amount of money left on the end he will likely pay you with a jack hoping you are bluffing. Just a thought. GRANT PITTMAN | ||

| I find myself in similar situations, however when you make substantial bets and then check the river it seems to show weakness. I always get raised alot and am forced to fold. | ||

Exactally - I foundthat sometimes if I keep betting strong - they will call to the river then fold when the last big bet comes out. butif you check - they will bet big and you will end up folding - even though you still might have the best hand ( however weak it might be) | ||
