i'm about half way through phils new book and i'm a little concerned about the content. it seems like in every instent you should raise or fold. it seems like your game would loosen up considerably. i see some of his points, but i can also see a major swing in my bankroll if i started this kind of play. i enjoy the read, and what goes through his mind but i don't think i could adopt this strategy. does anyone agree??

I do NOT agree with the raise or fold concept...It is applicable in some instances...but in many cases calling can be the correct play!

Phil's book is pretty confusing is some places... It definately isn't a bood for beginners. Take everything you read with a grain of salt. As with every book - just try to adapt those things in the book that will fit into YOUR game. One of my favorite things about poker is that people can play completely different and all come out profitable (Lederer, Ivey, and The Devilfish all have COMPLETELY different styles but make a lot of money playing poker).

I think that Phil has a raise or fold bias because he plays mostly tournaments, where you can often push people off of hands more easily due to limited bankroll. Thus, once the limits get pretty high, you rarely limp or check/call, usually it's better to raise/reraise or fold if you think you are beat.

In limit, sometimes you have to just call when there is little chance that a raise will win the pot for you. I think Phil's strategy is good, but not appropriate to a loose low limit game where people will definitely call. You lose that chance of winning the pot right then which often makes a raise correct over a call.

It's amazing how everytime I log on here, I come across a thread that talks about exact conversations I just had. It's either real coincidental or I'm going to have to admit that I'm a poker addict.

My friend recently asked me how I like PH's book and I replied, "He could have just written the following and made it much shorter. Chapter 1: Raise, Chapter 2: Re-raise, Chapter 3: All in." Very aggressive style but I expected it considering the author.

As for how I've done using his strategy. Remarkably, I spent some time on-line playing small/medium PP's real aggressively and came away with a very profitable outing --$1300 in just over an hour. Then again, I was catching cards pretty well...seemed to always get the set.

Anyway, it seemed to work, however, I played the following day and didn't do as well. If you stress easily at your game, then PH's style isn't for you.

Luck to all!

If I read my opponent as well as Phil Helmuth, I would also raise or fold!!!! If you watch him play online, where there is not as many tells, he will call alot more.

For the money $14 there is no better book out there. Slanskys are good but are $30 bucks and very math oriented.

He is trying to condense the advanced plays in a short book. If he said call and then call the book would not have much value.

It is not an insturction manual on how to play, but crammed with aggressive plays to slowly add to your game at the right time.

The worst thing you can do is play like Phil not being Phil.

Use the book like this.... Your in a tournament or game and you come across a hand and situation you remember from the book with the mouse and jackal. Apply if applicable some of the books techniques to this situation. Do not try to apply it to every hand.

I think its a great book and enjoyable to read. Slanskys are kinda boring.

i agree with you slate. i find sklansky a little boring as well. my game is not caught up in the numbers as much as others. although i do calculate odds, i don't solely play my game based on them. i'm more of a feel player rather than odds. thanks for the comments.

while this book seems good for getting beginners introduced to the game, i wouldn't recommend playing this style in any sort of low limit game. if you went into a 2/4 game ramming and jamming with pocket 7's out of position for an entire weekend i don't think you would be doing to well.

here is a nit-picky part from one of his examples that i found funny as well:

pg. 44: "you're playing a $5-$10 online game at ultimatebet.com"
pg. 46 (same example): "look for body language that might show confidence or fear"

well assuming that everyone at the table isn't playing with web cams that you are looking at i think you are in trouble.

not a *bad* book....but i think there are many better places to start than here..........winning low limit hold 'em being my choice.

I agree Lee Jones book is much more applicable to low limit games. However, I think that there are several things in Phil's book that can be beneficial. I think one of the most beneficial for me is to guess the opponents hole cards. It helps you to stay focused on the game and your opponents. Before I read this book and started using this tool I was guilty of losing focus on the table and just "playing cards". This is an elementary concept but it is one in which I was lacking.
