do pot odds matter in a tournament?, johnny, 18. Aug 2003 10:28

first my question: how much do you pay attention to draws and odds in a tournament? i understand the concept of getting proper pot odds to call when on a draw, but that's over your career. in a tournament, your chips are gone when they're gone. so how much wait should i put on pot odds when drawing during tournament play?

i've been playing a lot of low limit online ring games and have done quite well. i've recently tried some low buy-in (NL mainly) tournaments and i just suck. i think i'm way too tight. it seems like you have to bluff a lot in tournaments. if you make a raise pre-flop, you have to be prepared to go all in on the flop no matter what comes. i just play too tight and before i know it the blinds are have me short-stacked. i guess i just need to buy a book. anyone know of any good online reading on tournament play?

thanks,
johnny.

If you have a large stack then pot odd should be played. If you are on a smaller stack, you cannot afford to be making calls that you may only win 1/6 of the time because you do not have the chips to make that call 6 times....Remember in a tourney your last chip is the most important. Don't spend it on a 1/6 shot....I also try not to call my last chips away. If I am short stacked, I will usually only play hands I would be willing to go all in with...

for online tips I like www.cardplayer.com and go to the articles>archives....about 2 months worth of reading in there.
