Autonomic nervous system, Charles Bedell, 16. Aug 2003 20:00

I started playing online holdem about 6 months ago but if I can't learn to control the epinephrine push that occurs when I'm holding a winning hand I can pretty much forget about playing live. My carotids bulge to the beat of a pounding heart, respiration takes off, and I'm sure a flush comes to my skin. I try very hard not to get over stimulated with a good hand but all efforts to date have been fruitless. Any suggestions from those that have experienced and defeated this problem would be greatly appreciated. Cactus

I'll admit I get pretty jacked with a great flop (nut flush, boat, etc) but I think I do a decent job of fighting the urge to jump out of my chair, or ask the dealer just how much I've won, or even change color by one shade.

it's not easy to control emotions though, especially if you're having a great or horrible day.

Starting hands are easy for me(and I think thats when a lot of players show tells) I see those 2 bullets staring at me and think "oh great these are gonna cost me 100 bucks" I guess I never get too excited at the first two.

Hope this helps.

Nah.......I'm sure you would be totally fine in a live game, really. You get that way because you *can*.......noone's around and everyone acts differently when they're sitting in front of their computer screen. I'm sure you wouldn't jump for joy or curse out loud in a real game (LOL)....it's just that your emotions are allowed to come out here. I don't say two words at the table, but while I'm at my computer, I do! It's just human nature. As long as your emotions don't get the best of you and you don't type anything bad in on the chat window, it's ok.

Hi Charles

I think you need to learn how to control your emotions....Use self-talk....Relax......Devolop long term attitudes about poker......It's a marathon....NOT a sprint!

Thanks all for the suggestions and observations. I've thought of a biofeedback routine, but can't think of anything that gives me a rush like a winning hand before the river, in order to utilize the method. I've tried to play on line like I would if live. ie. little conversation ( I can't talk and think too well at the same time), no jumping for joy when I bad beat another player, no cursing, pissing or moaning when it happens to me, etc.. But that old revving heart rate and respiration just can't be controlled. So, I'm afraid that a live game will only magnify the response. But you never know until you try, so look out Excaliber newbies, 3 weeks to Vegas. I plan to try some of the suggestions, particularly the 'pocket rockets are going to cost me $100'. Maybe this is a game where a little pessimism is allowed.

I'm finding myself reacting similarly with my online play Cactus. But I used to play quite a bit in B&M games years ago and it didn't seem to be such a problem at that time. Maybe it's something about online. In my case I get pretty much just as excited when I'm bluffing so I'm not sure I'm that easy a read. In fact there were many times when my opponents interpreted my throbing jugglar as a bluff tell when in fact I had the nuts. lol

Time and experience are the key. When you have played enough hours seeing AA in your hand is as interesting at 72o. Granted they are played a bit differently, but you basically know how you are going to play them in a given situation and setting, because you have seen it before. You make decisions and know that the result of any particular hand are unimportant.

To dilute the effect of your hands, add more hands to the pool of your experience.

Having sex before a B&M session should calm you down, or during a break, or in the car right before...

Yoga/tai chi/the "softer" martial arts teaches you to get your brain right.
