some common horrible short handed plays, grant pittman, 16. Aug 2003 19:34 | ||

| I enjoy playing poker in short handed situations. The game is more of a challenge to me because there are so many more decisions to make since you are forced to play many more hands than in a full game. I play a lot of short handed poker online and thought i would write about a few of the common plays that are made that are simply horrible. All the examples I give will assume that you are playing with 4 opponents or fewer. #1. Calling with a wired pair when there are one or more overcards on board after an opponent has bet and you have players behind you yet to act. I am not saying you are always losing here when you are bet into of course. But if you decide that you are going to play your pair then RAISE !!!!!!! Don't let players in behind you with hands that they are getting the right price to draw at for one bet but not two. If they decide to call the double bet with bottom pair at least you have made them pay !!!!!! To not raise here is poor poker and very wimpy indeed. An example is you are in the big blind with 77 in an unraised pot with a flop of 8-5-2 and the small blind bet and you have two limpers behind you. It is possible the blind has an 8 but if he doesn't you will be in good shape to his hand if you can get him headsup. If an opponent reraises behind you you will almost always have to give up the hand but at least you took proper action given the situation. #2. Not raising flush draws when you have at least one overcard or any type of straight draw after an opponent leads into you. This situation come up often and it is often misplayed by weak short handed players. For example lets say you limp in the pot with KJ of diamonds and there is one other limper behind you and the blinds. The flop comes 9-4-3 with two diamonds and the small blind leads and the big blind folds. There is a very good chance the small blind has at least a pair here and you are beat at the moment but you should raise here regardless. You will make the player behind you fold unless the flop has really helped him(unlikely) which will give you last position to act in the following rounds of betting. You will often have as many as 15 cards to hit (9 diamonds,3 jacks,3 kings) on the turn. You also stand a small chance of folding a better hand than yours and you stand a good chance of getting a free turn card if you want. Play good and RAISE !! #3. Calling with ace high on the flop with an opponent betting and you having players yet to act behind you. I see this play a lot also in short handed situations. It is especially poor when you haven't taken any aggressive action preflop and your opponents are less likely to fear your presence in the pot. The call usually stems from frustration of missing yet another flop but a call on a missed flop with ace high with players behind you is a serious losing play and very very weak!!!! If there hasn't been a raise preflop there likely isn't anything worth fighting for. You missed so muck that garbage and wait for a better spot for your $$$$$$$$$$$$. Something to think about. | Good stuff Grant. I pretty much only play full ring games, but I'm there late a lot and I often find myself in a 5 or 6 player game. This is the first post I've read that I felt I needed to jot down. | ||

| Hi Mr. Pittman I know I find it hard to play a shorthanded ringgame. I usually get out when there are less then 6 people at a table unless there is a giant fish there.( even then I find it hard to make some money ). Strangely enough I like shorthanded tourney tables and do well when we are down to 5. I like to improve there and this sure helps and gets me in a different thinking pattern. tyvm, tommyhawk | ||
