I got aces cracked twice in the same tourney. Once by 99, once by KK, both by people moving all-in with their hands before the flop. The 99 flopped a full house and KK turned a set.

What is up with that?

Of course, there was usually assortment of two and three outers, as well.

Paul,

Not to vent or anything about bad beats, but recently I have taken a string of some horrific ones on PokerStars, something which I cannot recall ever experiencing in nearly three years of online play. I consider myself a decent player and rely on internet poker to supplement my income, but this past week has been brutal. I am beginning to notice a trend on PokerStars where bad play always gets rewarded. That is, people with inferior holdings continue to build huge pots, knowing they are beat, and they always catch that miracle card on the river. I know this sounds crazy, but from what I have seen recently it is becoming commonplace. Here are some of the beats I have taken:

1) $30 limit hold em tourney, 200+ entrants, 75 remaining, I'm ranked 30th. A-A loses to 10-10 after I had 3-bet my opponent before the flop, board consists of total rags, he overplays his hand and ultimately catches a 10 on the river. I was so outraged at the manner in which he continued to play back at me before the river that I never recovered.

2) $50 no limit hold em tourney, 300+ entrants, 125 remaining, I'm ranked 75th. K-K loses to A-Q. I don't recall the limits, but I made a modest raise under the gun, was flat called by UTG+1, and then someone with an equal stacked moved in on me. Taking into account that I was flat called, I didn't put the all-in on A-A and was correct. A-Q wins when the flop brings 3 clubs and the river a fourth club to give him a queen high flush.

3) 5/10 6-player max table. I'm in the big blind with A-K. Everyone folds to the small blind who limps. I raise, he re-raises and I cap. Flop comes A-A-10, rainbow. Betting is capped on the flop. Turn is a 6. Betting once again capped. The river is a 7. Fearing that my A-K may be no good, I just call the river, and to my utter astonishment my opponent turns over 8-9. Totally absurd but yet again another example where bad play is rewarded.

I was so distraught over the incidents that I have witnessed this past week that I e-mailed support and asked them to review several hands. They promptly attributed everything to bad luck, could not offer an explanation of how that 8-9 could call the flop and of course reminded me that their shuffle had recently been audited.

And to make matters worse, a friend of mine with limited online poker experience deposited $50 into PokerStars to play in one of those $11.50 WCOOP satellites where 1 qualifer to the main event is awarded for every 100 entrants. He told me that the turning point for him was when he called an all-in bet nearly equal to his stack with 3-3 and a board of 10-J-Q. His opponent had 10-J. The turn and river were a 9 and K respectively, resulting in a chop. He realized that his call was terrible, but regardless he was rewarded. My friend ended up finishing in the top 3 out of 375 entrants, earning him a seat in Sunday's big one. Just amazing.

Well i consider myself a reasonable player and have recently started playing again on Poker Stars and have in the past 2 weeks turned my initial deposit of $50 into a four figure sum. I think what you are describing in short term luck, i would keep at it as there are some terrible players playing on poker stars( as well as some very good ones ).

hey chase, what srt of games do you play to make such a great amount? more importantly, what games did you start off playing with just your $50? i'll be leaving for school in a week and was thinking about taking on some online poker to make a little extra cash. something as little as $50 a week would be plenty for a broke college student.

I did a similar thing on Paradise but i got most of my earnings there from playing sit and go's and low limit HE tables ( no higher than $2-4 ) but it took me about 3 months of playing maybe about 12 hours a week. For the year before that though i had brought in for $50 about 3 times and then would make that go up and down for a bit until i lost it.

In the past few weeks on PokerStars a large proportion of my success has been in the mulit table NL tournaments ( 300+) where i have been lucky enough to win a biggish one and place on the final table of about 3 others. I also am doing quite well in the NL 18 people sit and go's ( i think they are called 2 tables s and g's). I also have played a bit of the NL cash games where the loose play and low blind size ( $.5 +1blinds allow for some tight play that often gets paid off ).

I have read a lot of books and taken a lot of information from here i also thinks it helps if you do a bit of away from the table analysis as well etc...

I would suggest that a lot of the low limit games are money makers if you are prepared to be disciplined.

Best of luck hope this helped give me a shout if you are playing ( my Pokerstars name is Rich-King) !!!
