Moneymaker Ivey...no handshake! Come on Phil!!!!, spk, 15. Aug 2003 14:04

I have watched the hand in which the professional Phil Ivey is eliminated by Chris "don't call me dead money" Moneymaker. I noticed that Chris comes over to do the right thing and shake Phil's hand. Maybe it is me but I beleive Phil refused to shake with Chris and instead shakes the hand of Dan Harrington. Did anybody else pick up on this?

What poor poor sportsmenship, Ivey should be ashamed of himself, on the biggest poker stage he cannot shake the hand of the man who eliminated him and why? Because he is not a pro? Give me a break, I have played with Andy Bloch, Paul Darden and Phil Ivey, and yes they are all excellent pro's, however one mistake most of them make is not giving the so called amature any respect at all............

I think he did give Moneymaker a handshake, granted, he didn't look to happy about losing.

I really hope I am wrong and he did shake hands, however I have watched it a couple times and it looks like he did not.

i thought it was a real quick no-heatfelt handshake...understandable as he was probably in a little shock (at least i would be in shock it iwas taken out like that).

I remember thinking the exact same thing when I saw this. However, when I watched the replay it appeared that he did shake Moneymaker's hand. It's tricky because of the two camera angles that they show are not at the same time.

I noticed it too, I thought it was rude and childish behavior for a professional.

I'm sure that you have know Idea what it is like sitting in a room with that many great poker players and having a BAD BEAT like Phil had that day. Phil in my mind is the best poker player on the circuit right now. He might not have shaken the hands he was suppose to but a lot worse things have happened over the felt battle field. Let Phil have a moment to himself. I'm sure he had his reasons

I don't think Ivey displayed poor sportsmanship. He was probably a little shocked that it was over. It was 2am in the morning....C'mon.....Do you shake opponents hands when u bust them out of the 5-10 game???

I think Phil made a BAD call going all in. He had to have put Moneymaker on three Queens. There were many cards in the deck that could have helped Moneymaker....A Queen, Two Three Aces, and Three Sixes. I would like to have 6 outs in that situation... It wasn't exactly a mircale pull

I'm not sure if it was poor sportmanship or if Ivey shook his hand or not. Moneymaker did jump up out of his chair and run around, fist pumping, shooting and celebrating - was that poor sportsmanship? It was 2am everybody was tired as hell and Ivey had just been sucked out on, and knocked out of the tourney, a hand had he won mind you he probably would have either won the whole thing or made the top 3. I don't think it was an intentional diss on Moneymaker, and even if it was I can't necessarily blame Phil under the circumstances.

Good point about the 2am thing. If I'm not mistaken, Dan Harrington was caught telling his buddies just how tired he was just before the Ivey/MM hand. Ivey busted out 1 from the final table and although his chip count wasn't too high, I would be willing to bet that all 9 guys took a huge sigh of relief when he busted.

If I lost to a guy and he stomped around like some roided up football player after making a tackle.....I would probably opt for the F-bomb over a handshake. Being a sportsman applies the winners & losers and I don't think Moneymaker displayed much class at all through out the tournament. I would bet that quit a few players will be gunning for a piece of that prize money just a little bit harder.

I have to disagree......

From what's been carefully edited for viewing eyes, it looks as though Moneymaker has played the part of fortunate sheep perfectly. Looking innocent when winning the stunning hands, and even apologetic.
Sure, he has been pumped up a few times, such as when he nailed the 8 to boot Humberto. But recall that the Big H had the balls to wave his finger in MM face. How disrespectful is it to wave your hand saying "you don't do that to me". (Actually, it's just moronic since you don't control what cards come out of the deck)

All in all, from what we've been shown, I'd say the amateurs we're seeing are answering the pros arrogance quite nicely. (Think of Farha's and Vahedi's comments throughout the series!!!)

2am, ... most players are going to be strung out on coffee and the surreal stress of the event. Let us all remember that Moneymaker "is" an amateur, so consequently "he" is the player we should be cutting a little slack for. The pros have been there and know better. In fact, Moneymaker hooting and jumping in excitement is "precisely" the kind of behaviour you would expect from an amateur having the tournament of his life, ... who suddenly remembers to go and shake Ivey's hand.

Remember when T.J. Cloutier and Jesus Ferguson went head-to-head in the WSOP. When Ferguson won, T.J.'s reaction was to shake Ferguson's hand, ... because T.J. is a sportsman, has been there before, and is a trooper. Losers become winners by losing like winners is one way to say it.
