Questions for the panel, mrbippy, 15. Aug 2003 13:53
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
Just some random questions. I didn't think these were appropriate for the "poker" section so here goes.

Watching poker tourneys on the TV sometimes you will see a player use what I call "card caddies". I forget the names of the players but one had a little pyramid and another had a glass frog that they would place on top of their cards.

A)Do any of y'all use one and if so what?

I had read on UPF that smoking was recently banned in the poker room during the WSOP.

A)Do most B&Ms have a no smoking policy?
B)Does anyone feel that this gives an edge to non-smoking players? (Not entirely serious here but who knows)

The set of most WPT events that you see on the tube looks like the set of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" with all the flashing lights and camera guys in yo face and what not.

A)Does anyone know or has anyone heard how this may affect a contestants frame of mind and play if at all?

Last one

What does it take to become a professional dealer in LV or AC?
Experienced only or do the train?

Any thoughts are appreciated

Some rooms have a strict policy about putting any objects at all on the table. Others allow walkmans. If the rules are loose, a lot of players will use lucky charms and such to protect their hands, rather than putting a chip on top. Why do this? Well, it prevents the dealer from mucking your hand accidentally and it protects your hand from being declared dead if another player mucks his cards into yours.

Some do, some don't, and some have a smoking section and a NS section.

Sure it does. I play in a nonsmoking room and a lot of smokers miss hands for which they have paid the blinds because they are out having a cigarette. Anything that costs them money pays me. It is a small edge, but it helps. It might also help that they aren't playing their best game becasue they don't have enough nicotine in their systems to concentrate.

You miss out on tells that you might get off of the way a smoker smokes, but on the flipside of that, there are a lot of nervous things that smokers do when they get nervous and *don't* have a cigarette, such as putting their fingers up to their lips.

It would certainly affect me. I'd be so afraid of making a bad move and looking bad on television that I might not bluff when I should. Who knows? I don't think it would help my game. I'm pretty sure it would hurt it.

I hear that there's a lot of demand for dealers right now ... there was a recent cardplayer article about it. But if you want to deal at a great cardroom, I'd imagine you would need some experience. The small places will train you.

Same goes for people who don't know the difference between "your" and "you're".

You sir, are a complete and total idiot! I pity your foolishness. This is a free country and poker is a game played in a free country. You never learned this in school did you? Give up poker son and join some commie-lib state health department/propaganda dept.

Agreed. Everybody should have the right to commit suicide on the installment plan.

I'm against marketing cigarettes to children and I'm all for anti-smoking campaigns to raise awareness for the danger of smoking, but if anybody chooses to do it that is their business. And if it would keep them away from spk, I'll give cigarettes to my daughters :)

I have a token I usually bring in to protect my cards. It's just a silver coin about the size of a $1 casino coin. It's actually a commemorative coin made for a government project I worked on (why they made coins I don't know, but a customer gave it to me so what the hell). It's nothing special, but I prefer to use it to protect my cards over poker chips so I can keep all my chips together..

While we're on the topic, what is the average salary for a poker dealer? Seems that if someone were looking to go pro, getting a job as a dealer would be good for their game in that they could observe the games and think about it all day long and still have a dependable income.

there's a small section in Poker Nation about the life of a dealer and doesn't make it sound too appealing.

Actually, dealers are notoriously bad poker players. I think that the problem is that there are a lot of really bad things done at the tables routinely and a dealer sitting there who isn't already a good player is going to be ill-educated.

I agree, there is a big difference from watching all day compared to playing all day. Watching average players play bad all day won't improve your game. If you caddied for me all the time in golf that wouldn't make you as good as Tiger Woods. Although, some people say that I remind them of Tiger.

I have a Beretta 9mm that I put over my cards. Never had a dealer scoop them up by accident once. Works great.

I use to do that but no more.
Hard to take a person seriously. And the little hooky dooky does not look good with a short stack of chips.

I do cover my cards with a chip though....for protection of the cards.

Hey donkey,

If you want lung cancer then smoke up in your own house. Stop crying because you can't spread the negative side effects from your addiction. I think banning smoking is the best thing that happened to poker rooms.

Yeah right. Smoking causes cancer. Next you're going to suggest that Nyquil causes drowsiness. Sheesh :)
