$10+1 NLHE Single Table tournies, James Brooke, 15. Aug 2003 12:49
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
Hello

I have been playing HE for about a year now and spend most of my time playing $5+1, $10+1, $20+1 & $30+1 single table tournies (NL) - 10 players.

These start off with stacks of 1500 and blinds of 10/15, 15/25 and then double from then on (every 10 hands). I have read Daniel Negreanu's advice else where of just getting down to the last 5 with chips intact (i.e. 1500) and then playing more aggressively then.

I was hoping someone could give me suggestions on starting hands for the different positions at the start of the tourny (when your stack is 100x BB) and how this changes as they go up as i seem to be leeking a lot of chips and i feel a lot has been written about starting hands for limit but less for no-limit. Also, is it worth calling 4x BB bets with pocket pairs trying to flop a set at this stage. As the blinds go up, when can you no longer do this (say, in terms, of the proprortion of your stack you are risking or the amount you stand to gain)?

Would appreciate everyone's input on these questions and strategy in general seeing as i know i am better than most of my opponents but i'm still not that good.

I'll have more questions on these tournies to come no doubt as i sometimes win/come in the money 8-9 times in a row and then others i won't win for 15 goes, so i'd like to know where i'm going wrong. Without doubt my main queries at the moment are to do with starting hands...

Dans strategy on the single table tournies is by far the best. You hand selection should be very tight. There are three groups of hands that I play, and I play them each differently. The first group is AA and KK, there both played the same preflop, a big raise. After the flop with AA i go all-in no matter what. With KK, i go all-in unless an ace hits the flop. The second group is AK, QQ, JJ. With these hands I raise 3 times the BB, and play the flop accordingly. (just had AA in the tourney i was playing... pretty funny,,) and the third group is all other pocket pairs. With these hands i just limp and hope to flop a set, if not, FOLD!!! (unless you have top pair.) That is the beginning of the tourney for you. and that strategy does wonders for me. You can mix up your betting amount for a little confusion. They key part to the tourney is the middle part. By now theres prolly like 5 players left and the blinds are getting big enough to where you want to start stealing em. And because of you tight play in the begining and assuming your oppenants are paying attention, you have establised a very tight image which will aid in your theft attempts. You still have to have somewhat of a hand before you can put a raise in there though. I will with any Ace or KJ or J10 suited etc... I use this strategy until I think i have enough chips to make it to 3rd. At this point I letter the other players knock eacher out again. Usually third place pays, so once i get there and get my money back, I play really aggressive!!!
Hope my book helps!!!

Aces, that seems like great advice to me.

I have been only playing NL for a few months, but after reading McEvoy/Cloutier things really became clearer for me. I have consistently placed top 3 in $10 sit and gos at Party and UB (although Party's are easier).

Since Party is a little insane, I find that you can actually play tight until you get down to 4 players (instead of 5). But I like to try (if possible) to double my chips to 1600 (or 2000) opportunistically (if the cards allow). That gives me enough chips to play more aggressively when the field gets to 4.

If the cards aren't running, I can still usually last until the final 4, but now get a bit desperate.

One thing - Cloutier recommends always betting the same amount - about 3-4 times the blind. That way, nobody can put you on a hand. I have thought (like you said) if you mix it up, it will have the same effect. It is only after lots of familiarity that players can start figuring out how you play AA or KK. But what do you think of Cloutier's theory? This is only for big pairs and premium hands.

Would you recommend TJ/McEvoys book? I've just qualified (via a couple of back-to-back free-rolls) to a tourny with 320 starting players, $5000 prizepool and first place a seat at the WPO. Which books do i just have to know about to do well in this... I'm happy getting so far, but i'd like a good shot at this one. Thanks

Thanks mate, much appreciated... the only problem i sometimes find is that i don't really get any hands and find myself with 1300 (-200 from start) with blinds at 100/200 but with 7-8 players still in. At what point do you start getting aggressive in this situation?

with 7-8 left, I would play tight unless you would be eaten by the blinds coming up. In NL, it only takes one hand to bust another player.

good luck = -)

Just a quick question re: your play of aces. Early on on the tournament, say when the blinds are only 15 and your stack is 1500, what is a big bet?

Also, i am quite happy to call reasonable size bets with a PP, hoping to double through if i catch a set. If someone followed your advice of going all-in on the flop no matter what, they would certainly risk losing a lot of money to a set (and i would be very happy to see that they were doing my work for me going all-in...)

I have been thinking about this strategy and would you think that it would work in rings games as well? Probably like the NL games at Party where it is possible to play it.

Theres only one part of this strategy that you could use in a ring game, and thats the beginning.. playing tight. In the ring games you only have to worry about one thing, and thats if your winning or losing. You dont have to worry about blinds going up, how many players are left, etc... In ring games if you only play top quality hands and you play them right, in the long run your gonna be a winning player.
