What are the odds of this happening?, Frinky, 15. Aug 2003 09:57

Last night at B&M playing 10/20....In the first hour/hour and fifteen mins I hit 5 sets (all middle sets) on the flop only to have someone else flop top set each and every time. Talk about a dent in the bankroll....4 of those times the top set player limped in. Had no idea it was coming until it was too late. Odd since usually I tend to overvalue opponents hands. (Still working on that..but this will haunt me for a while)

I feel for you. I was on streak of having sets busted recently as well. My busts were a little more diverse (I think it went, lose to bigger set, lost to straight, lose to straight, lose to bigger set, lose to flush).

But man those streaks hurt. You lose a lot of money with a busted set, especially when you get beat by another set (usually fairly hidden), or a runner runner straight or flush.

The interesting thing about it was that because I never showed my hand I got this incredibly weak image at the table....one that I tried to capitalize on/play to ..to no avail (except for one hand)...Players were constantly trying to run over me...I have to say that if affected my play adversely...I was not on tilt...rather I tightened up so much that I missed numerous bets...one time I was certain quad 6's had beaten my eights full....still a nice 500.00 pot ( six-handed capped pre-flop - check/call/raiser situation...) but I had to get up for 10 mins....take a walk outside....talk it over with a friend.

I limped with 88 from the button (4 prev callers), raised with 10 10 from LP (2 mp callers) , limped from BB with 55, raised with JJ from late mid (first in), and raised with 99 from 1 off the button with 1 caller. As you can see it was fairly mixed depending on holdings, reads, etc.

Their hands were farily well hidden by the board....With 88 (UTG limper has AA)...board comes 58A...He bets...I raise...he calls...heads up now..Turn is a Q..(I had put him on AQ)....so he checks I raise he re-raises (just confirming my thinking that he has AQ...) so I re-raise and he caps it...When he caps I suspect maybe he has more...but it makes too much sense for him to have AQ....River is a blank...He bets...I call....(I wasn't going to make a big laydown on the river....just too much of a chance that perhaps he does have AQ....
