Dealer wouldn't play with me, DJpoker, 14. Aug 2003 21:30

Hey guys,
I have a question for the more experienced players. I have been playing seriously for 500 hours and been avg. roughly $25/hour.

Last night when I sat down, one of the dealers was playing and he left after I beat him on the first hand we played against each other ( I had A4 suited on button and caught 2 pair on flop). He was sitting next to a buddy of mine who later told me that the dealer said "if I sat at the table he was leaving." I asked why and he says I can't beat you. This had no affect on anyone else at the table, but I am wondering what to think of it. It may be just his stigma because he has been caught in a couple of my recent rushes.

Anyway, what is funny is if you ask 10 people about how I play, 5 will tell you I'm a rock and 5 will tell you I'm a loose cannon, because I do try to mix up my play as to maximize profit.

I find these type of mixed messages to be a major benefit, but I guess what I'm getting at is how do you want to be viewed at your local B&M? I don't want people walking away from me like that. I view everyone as a customer. Give me some feedback.
Thanks, DJpoker

HI DJ--i feel that the problem is not yours but the dealers. Many dealers dont play very well but think they do.Some tend to be very superstitious ( a trait of the less skilled ). From what i can tell, you are a pretty good player and in the short term you held over this dealer who already knew you were a better player than he was. If you've won that consistently over 500 hands , your style is just fine.

Fuel; the boom--gary

DJ,

Obviously the dealer was just a recreational type and anyone who says,"I can't play with this guy 'cause he always beats me" is totally inexperienced and overly superstitious! He's admitting to his own weaknesses without even realizing it.

He may "think" that he plays well......he's watched the game and the players thousands of times.......he's observed the actions of the good and the not so good players......and he "thinks" that he is a knowlegable type because of it.

If he was a skilled player, then I doubt that he would chose to leave the game when you sat down....because even if you were someone to fear at the table....a skilled and experienced player wouldn't leave the game just because someone beat him in a couple of hands.

He probably already had it in his mind that you were going to beat him no matter *what* cards he held, and for you, it was a shame to see him go, I'm sure!

Probably just "luck" ... there's a solid player at Brantford named Mike. He's a nice personable guy to have at the table and as long as there are some fish to pick on, I don't mind him occupying a seat.

BUT I've probably played 20 sessions at a table with him and any time I'm sitting at the same table as Mike I just can't post a winning session. I've maybe won in 1 or 2 of those sessions. I'm a firm believer that superstition is bad luck, but it's gone to the point now where if I get stuck with Mike and there's another table in the room that is even decent to play at, I get a table change.

DJ, if you were playing online and I saw a few players like you at a table, I would probably switch tables myself because that table would probably not produce the best earn for me.

The image you describe is exactly the kind of image I would like to have in the games I'm playing, 5-10 online. It is essentially a "Wild and Crazy" image without actually being wild and crazy. I'm simply not going to make much money stealing at the tables I play because the players are anything but weak. The last thing I want to do is project an image that tightens them up because they are already plenty tough. I want them to stay overly loose with me all the way to the river so I can cash in on some great implied odds. With a rock image those implied odds evaporate while the players will never play weak enough for me to earn from stealing. You are probably already a successful player. Stay balanced and you will have a long and profitable career. Most gamblers will be chomping at the bit to get at you..

Thanks for the feedback folks. As you know I value your opinions and appreciate your perspective on that situation. As you guys say, I know who the rocks and loose players are so one person shouldn't affect you that much. The only problem is that where I play there is usually only
3-5 tables going so you don't have too many decisions.

Again, thanks and talk to you soon. DJpoker

You must be a good player to have anyone run away from a table, ... since bad players "attract" opponents by definition, so congrats.

Just as in business the owner that builds his business from the ground up is going to be dominant in most business skills, the bookkeeper or salesman "thinks" they could do the same because they share "a few" of the skills.

So it is for good poker players that have a wide base of sharp poker skills, who face people that have "a few" poker skills (observation and dealing cards, etc), so we should not be surprised when the good poker player wins against dealers as we should not be surprised that the salesman that sets up shop on his own does not succeed in most cases.

I happen to think that dealers are pretty sharp players, but that is from meeting a limited number of dealers at tables, with a pretty large percentage good eggs.

As for the dealer that wouldn't play you ... he saved money and spent his ultimate capital, time, which he could have used to learn to beat you by playing at your table, against you. It is always tough to reach the high ground if you are not willing to climb ... :)
