Emotional control.......priceless!, grant pittman, 13. Aug 2003 11:37 | ||

| Poker is a great game! It challenges the player on so many different fronts. The game requires that you be skillful in a lot of ways in the areas of math, psychology,memory/recall etc. to be successful. But there is one basic requirement for all poker players to have in order to win over the long run and that is that they must be emotionally sound when they play the game. I call this a requirement rather than a tool because it is very difficult to make rational decisions without solid emotional control yet it is not a tangible part of the game that can easily be recognized for its value. It certainly isn't as flashy as running a great bluff and it doesn't get headlines on the poker chat rooms like an amazing call down with king high. But as far as magnitude of importance when determining your overall long term profit in poker....it ranks right up there with knowledge of the game and hand reading skills in my opinion. In some higher limit games that I have battled in it was my only significant edge over the field yet it was a big enough edge(since several of my otherwise tough opponents were on complete TILT) to justify taking a seat in a seemingly tough game. The reason that the topic of emotional control does not get the "press" that other aspects of the game get is simply because it is too boring of a discussion topic. It is also one of the toughest elements in a players game to fix and KEEP IT WORKING. I must admit that I am happy that so many talented players neglect this part of their game because it continues to be there only consistent weakness but it creates a nice big target to fire at. If you are giving your poker game a serious look don't forget about the area of emotional control. It's worth a lot more to you than a fancy bluff or a great bluff pickoff in the longrun. | I couldn't agree more with you Grant. If there is one single thing that has cost me more money than any other, excluding a simple run of really bad cards, that thing is tilt. I've become fairly good at recognizing my tilt on its way and taking a walk, or just leaving if I can't do anything about it internally ... but every now and then I'll take a horrendous beat and feel the need to fire both barrels at the table for 5 minutes. That 5 minutes of idiocy costs me 5 hours of solid play. I see players who are otherwise very confident, but instead of 5 minutes of tilt once in a blue moon they spend half their session firing away. As soon as they are down on the day they go way down on the day. These guys may have great theoretical poker ability, but they'll never amount to a hill of beans because they lack discipline. I'm no zen monk, but I'm getting better every session. | ||

| I realised only about 6 months ago that if i had something on my mind or was in a bad mood not to take it out my bankroll, the same applies when i am bored ( online ) and i figured the way to cure my bordeom was to try and run over a table at low limit hold em. I dont anymore and i now make lots of money playing poker, coincidence ? Good post, one lesson though that i think you probably learn the hard way ! Chasepoker | ||

| GRANT, GREAT ADVICE! PLUS KEEPING YOURSELF TO YOURSELF. I HAVE A GOOD FRIEND WHO PLAYS IN BIG GAMES, AND HE NEVER SAYS A WORD( EXCEPT TO SAY RAISE) THAT KEEPS THE OTHER PLAYERS WHO HE REALLY IS. LJH | ||

| Great Post indeed Grant. Boring topic?....not in the least. Important and "priceless" like you stated?......ABSOLUTELY. It's a *must* if you want to truly succeed to the fullest. 4 POKER | ||
